Cynthia Woodcock Returns to Hilltop as Executive Director

UMBC and The Hilltop Institute are pleased to announce that Cynthia H. Woodcock has been named Hilltop’s next executive director. An MBA by training, Ms. Woodcock’s managerial skills span organizational development, strategic planning, marketing and new business development, system design, and financial management. She has designed and managed research projects and authored issue briefs for the federal government, states, and foundations on the delivery and financing of long-term services and supports (LTSS), chronic disease management, and preventing childhood obesity.

UMBC Chess Team Travels to Maryland State House

Earlier this month UMBC’s chess team was formally recognized on the floor of the Maryland State Senate and the House with a citation from Speaker Pro Tem Adrienne Jones (UMBC, ’76, psychology) UMBC Associate Vice President Lisa Akchin represented Dr. Hrabowski. UMBC Named to Kiplinger’s “Best Values in Public Colleges”

UMBC has again made the Kiplinger’s Personal Finance list of the 100 best values in public higher education. The list ranks four-year colleges and universities that “deliver academic quality and affordability.” This marks the fourth year in a row UMBC has appeared among Kiplinger’s best values. On the 2013 list, UMBC ranks 78 for in-state students and 61 for out-of-state ones, both up from last year. Four other Maryland universities made the list, highlighting the state’s commitment to both affordability and excellence in public higher education. UMBC Chess Team Ties for First Place Following the “World Series of Chess”

“The University of Maryland, Baltimore County chess team tied four other college teams for first place at the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship on Sunday — maintaining its record as one of two colleges with the most top finishes in the history of the international event,” wrote Kevin Rector in the Baltimore Sun. The UMBC chess team tied for first place December 30, 2012 in the Pan-Am Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship, advancing to the 2013 President’s Cup, known as the “Final Four” of chess. Soccer’s Liam Paddock Becomes 5th Retriever Ever Named First Team Academic All-American

UMBC fullback Liam Paddock has been selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men’s Soccer First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).   Paddock becomes the first men’s soccer player at UMBC to receive the nation’s top academic honor. He is the fifth student-athlete in school history to earn first team honors and the 20th Retriever overall to be cited by CoSIDA since 1977. UMBC Staff Present Program at the 19th National Conference on Students in Transition

Diane Lee, Jill Randles and Jarrett Kealey from the Office of Undergraduate Education, along with Sarah Jewett from the Office of the Provost, presented “UMBC Transfer Seminars: The Future of Transfer Student Success” at the 19th National Conference on Students in Transition in Philadelphia on October 15. The annual conference provides the opportunity to share and learn from each other the latest trends, initiatives, best practices, ideas, research and assessment strategies focused on supporting student success.

Two Professors Discuss Collaboration in The Chronicle of Higher Education

In fall 2011, Michele Osherow, associate professor of English, and Manil Suri, professor of mathematics, collaborated to jointly teach a freshman seminar, “Mathematics and What It Means to be Human,” in which they explored the connections between the two disciplines.
