Pres. Hrabowski Emphasizes Importance of Research Investment, Economic Development, Tech Transfer

Maryland Senate President Mike Miller and House Speaker Michael Busch held a press conference today to announce a package of bills relating to economic development initiatives. The proposed legislation would leverage public and private sector resources for higher education research endowments; create a seed fund to invest in cybersecurity and privacy companies; and strengthen ties between key state, federal and higher education institutions and neighboring communities by creating Reduced Tax Zones (called RISE zones). U.S. News Ranks UMBC’s Information Systems Online M.S. as a Top Program

Congratulations to UMBC’s Department of Information Systems for being ranked a top online graduate program in information technology by U.S. News & World Report. UMBC Study on Maryland Dream Act in the Gazette

An article published January 8th in The Gazette examines the impact of the Maryland Dream Act after its first year. The law allows undocumented immigrants who graduate from Maryland high schools and meet certain conditions to pay in-state and in-county tuition at Maryland public community colleges and public universities. The article, titled “The First Year of ‘Dreamers,’” references UMBC’s Maryland Institute for Policy Analysis and Research study on the economic impact of the Dream Act. Chess Team Places 2nd in “World Series” of College Chess

Congratulations to the UMBC Chess team for placing second in the 2013 Pan-Am Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship held December 27-30, 2013 at Texas Tech. The team will advance to the “Final Four” of chess to be held in New York City in the Spring along with Webster Univ. (1st), Illinois (3rd) and Texas Tech (4th). During the championship, UMBC defeated the University of West Indies, the University of Toronto, the University of Texas, Brownsville, Webster University C, and the University of Texas, Dallas A.
