Lynne Schaefer, vice president for finance and administration, was interviewed by The Business Officer in an article about the limited availability of public funds for higher education. Freshman Goalkeeper Connor Gordon Named America East Rookie of the Week

UMBC red-shirt freshman goalkeeper Connor Gordon has been named America East Conference Men’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Week for games ending March 29, the league office announced on March 31. Gordon fell one save shy of his season high, making 15 stops against Stony Brook as the Retrievers prevailed, 12-11, in overtime. The Retriever netminder made a one-on-one save with his team two men down midway through overtime, setting up Pat Young’s game-winning goal with 9.6 seconds to play in extra time. UMBC Reaches 10,000 Applications

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation has reached a major milestone: receiving over 10,000 applications for the Fall 2014 entering freshmen class! This represents a 50% increase in applications in the last five years, and is the first time we’ve hit the 10,000 applications mark. Pres. Hrabowski to Receive Honorary Degree from Arizona State University

President Hrabowski will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Arizona State University during their May 14th undergraduate commencement ceremony. This honor recognizes President Hrabowski’s work promoting educational achievement for all students, regardless of background. An ASU press release announcing the honor specifically highlights his work promoting the success of students from underrepresented minorities in STEM fields, and his role as chair of the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans.

Charge to Strategic Planning Strategy Groups

The development of Our UMBC: A Strategic Plan for Advancing Excellence is founded upon a broadly inclusive process. Discussions about focus areas for planning began at the 2013 University Retreat and continued through a series of 35 conversations with nearly 800 faculty, staff, students, and alumni this past fall. Based on this campus input, the Strategic Planning Steering Committee has identified four planning focus areas widely viewed as drivers of future success for UMBC:

UMBC Training Centers’ Center for Leadership & Innovation has introduced Lead to Innovate, a program offering noncredit Certificate Programs in Leadership and Innovation. The program is designed to help improve organizations by allowing leaders to effectively change their organization in a positive way. The Certificate in Leadership, a 10-day program, emphasizes individual and organizational leadership, while the Certificate in Innovation, also a 10-day program, focuses on adopting an innovative framework and building an innovative environment. President Hrabowski Participates in Launch of White House Initiative

On Thursday, February 27, President Obama launched My Brother’s Keeper, a White House initiative that empowers young men of color. My Brother’s Keeper will partner with businesses, government officials, faith leaders, non-profit organizations and private groups. These groups have pledged to invest in programs aimed at helping men of color, and replicate successful efforts across the country. Nearly two dozen UMBC faculty researchers and bwtech@UMBC entrepreneurs attended a media workshop held in the research and technology park’s new CyberHive on Thursday, February 20th. UMBC’s Office of Institutional Advancement organized the event in collaboration with bwtech@UMBC as an opportunity for researchers and entrepreneurs to learn about media relations and strategies to gain visibility for their work. The Daily Record recently named President Hrabowski and Alum Diane Bell-McKoy ’73, sociology, in their 2014 list of Influential Marylanders. Influential Marylanders celebrates people who have made significant impacts in their fields and continue to be leaders in Maryland. Winners are chosen in the categories of civic leadership, communications, education, finance and more. Bell-Mckoy, President and CEO of Associated Black Charities, was selected in the civic leadership category, while Dr. Hrabowski was chosen for his work as UMBC’s president in the education category. Tom Beck, Chief Curator, in the Baltimore Sun and Republican American

Tom Beck, Chief Curator, Library & Gallery, was recently quoted in The Baltimore Sun about the Library Gallery’s N. Jay Jaffee exhibit. The exhibit highlights a talented artist who has not received much recognition. “Jaffee never worked as a professional photographer,” says Tom Beck, chief curator at UMBC. “His career was in printing. So it was always a matter of balance between his business and personal obligations, his family. And he never worked very hard at getting exhibitions.” Read the entire article here. Samantha Hawkins ’14, INDS, Crowned Miss Baltimore

Congratulations to Samantha Hawkins ’14, Interdisciplinary Studies, who was crowned Miss Baltimore on January 25. As Miss Baltimore, Samantha will continue her work helping low-income families by launching a state-wide campaign to expand the Food Resource Program. Samantha is a Maryland Delegate Scholar and a recipient of the Walter Sondheim Jr. Nonprofit Leadership Scholarship. In 2012 and 2013 she was also awarded the Miss America Academic Award. After graduation, Samantha will be teaching in Baltimore City as a member of Teach for America, while pursuing a Master’s degree in Elementary Education at Johns Hopkins.

Princeton Review Names UMBC a “Best Value College”

The Princeton Review released its list of “Best Value Colleges for 2014” today, created based on surveys regarding academics, cost and financial aid awards. Out of the 2,000 undergraduate institutions surveyed, UMBC was one of 75 public universities named a “Best Value College.” UMBC also received this distinction in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013.
