UMBC’s Community Leaders Meeting and Construction Projects in The Baltimore Sun

The Baltimore Sun featured two articles on UMBC’s annual update meeting with local community leaders on upcoming campus projects. At this year’s meeting, Joe Rexing, campus architect, shared plans for Phase II of the Performing Arts and Humanities building, a new campus entranceway, events center and interdisciplinary sciences building. UMBC also dedicated 11 acres of land for conservation and received a Tree Campus USA award. Local leaders, including 1st District Councilman Tom Quirk and Delegate James Malone Jr., expressed enthusiasm for the projects. As USM Seeks New Chancellor, Pres. Hrabowski Affirms Commitment to UMBC

On Tuesday, Dr. William “Brit” Kirwan announced his plans to retire as chancellor of the University System of Maryland (USM). As the search begins for a new chancellor, the Baltimore Business Journal and Washington Business Journal have highlighted President Hrabowski as an exceptional Maryland leader, recognized nationally for his commitment to helping students from all backgrounds succeed. WBJ Managing Editor Robert Terry says our president has “proven himself a visionary,” but Hrabowksi affirms he is staying put. “I’m seeing how we are building an institution that’s a national model,” Hrabowski says. “I really do believe in UMBC.”

Kerry Kidwell-Slak, Career Services, in Policy Link

Kerry Kidwell-Slak, associate director of internships and employment in UMBC’s Career Services Center, recently spoke with Policy Link (for the newsletter America’s Tomorrow) about tech employers seeking diverse candidates. The article “Coding for Equity: Connecting Young People of Color to Tech Careers” discusses the disconnect between growth in the technology industry and underrepresented groups, including women, African Americans and Latinos. Students Share Stories: Navigating College with Mental Health Challenges Recap

A UMBC Community Message from Provost Philip Rous I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Julia Ross as Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT). Dr. Ross will begin her new role on August 4, 2014. Dr. Ross’s appointment brings to a successful conclusion a national search that was begun at the start of this academic year. UMBC Hosts First Lavender Celebration

On May 1, UMBC hosted its first annual Lavender Celebration to honor graduating LGBTQ students and the contributions of allied community members to supporting campus inclusivity. Lavender Celebrations began at the University of Michigan in 1995, and the idea has spread to college campuses nationwide as a way to acknowledge and honor graduating LGBTQ students. U.S. Treasury Deputy Secretary Raskin Visits UMBC to Deliver First Policy Address

Sarah Bloom Raskin, Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, visited UMBC on April 29 to make her first official policy address. Raskin met with UMBC students for a roundtable discussion before her speech on college affordability and student debt. In her remarks, Raskin emphasized the importance of a college education for economic mobility and also explored key questions the U.S. Treasury is asking with regard to student debt, to make sure students make informed choices and strong educational investments.
