Six UMBC Graduates Among Inaugural America East Presidential Scholar-Athletes

Six UMBC student-athletes were among the 48 America East student-athletes named to the conference’s inaugural Presidential Scholar-Athlete class for their outstanding academic achievements throughout their collegiate careers. Approved by the America East Board of Presidents last June and implemented for 2013-14 academic year, the Presidential Scholar-Athlete award recognizes graduating student-athletes who compiled a cumulative grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.75 or higher as an undergraduate student. President Hrabowski Discusses College Access in Trusteeship Magazine

UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski recently wrote an essay on the importance of education to the promise of the American Dream in Trusteeship, a magazine published by the Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities. In his essay, Dr. Hrabowski recounts the history of access to higher education, from the G.I. bill that enabled veterans to attend college to present-day legislation further extending access. UMBC and Japan’s Kyushu University Establish Partnership

On June 24, UMBC signed a memorandum of understanding with Kyushu University to promote academic and research cooperation between the two universities.The partnership will allow faculty and student exchanges and joint research projects, focusing on cybersecurity initially. Provost Phillip Rous commented on the partnership, saying, “The academic agreement signed between UMBC and KU articulates our universities’ shared vision and intention to collaborate broadly in both research and education.” Click here to read a full description of the agreement and here to read an article about the partnership in the Baltimore Business Journal.

UMBC Swimming and Diving’s McKissick Featured in Sports Illustrated

UMBC Swimming and Diving rising sophomore Andrew McKissick (Ellicott City, Md./Mount St. Joseph’s) is featured in the “Faces in the Crowd” section of the June 23 issue of Sports Illustrated. The issue began hitting newsstands and mailboxes on Wednesday, June 18. McKissick won the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim for the second consecutive year back on Sunday, June 8. The Retriever swimmer bested the field of over 600 competitors in the 4.4-mile open-water swim with a time of just under 90 minutes (1:29:35), which also beats his winning time of 1:31.46 from 2013.

President Hrabowski on EvoLLLution

President Hrabowski participated in an interview about innovation and the changing culture of higher education on EvoLLLution, an online newspaper focusing on continuing education. Dr. Hrabowski emphasized the importance of innovation to the success of colleges and universities in meeting student needs, and discussed the need to welcome nontraditional students. He also encouraged optimism in higher education, saying, “My colleagues and I at UMBC are determined to remain young as an institution and as people” by always focusing on new opportunities to grow. Tim Hall, Athletics, To Chair NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics

UMBC Director of Athletics Tim Hall has been elected as the chairman of the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics for the fall of 2014, the committee announced last month at their meetings in Orlando, Fla. Hall, who has served on the 15-member, multi-divisional committee since 2011, replaces current CWA chair Marilyn Moniz-Kaho’ohanohano of the University of Hawaii. He had previously chaired the CWA/MOIC (Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee) Disability Subcommittee from 2012-14. UMBC Signs Agreement with U.S. Army RDECOM

On June 6, 2014, UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski and U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) Director Dale Ormond signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). The CRADA enables future collaboration between UMBC and the U.S. Army. Tony Moreira, Vice Provost of Academic Affairs, Honored by President of Portugal

Antonio “Tony” Moreira, vice provost of academic affairs and professor of chemical and biochemical engineering, has been awarded the National Order of Civil Merit of Public Education by the President of Portugal on behalf of the Portuguese government. The award is given to distinguished individuals from the Portuguese diaspora community and is in celebration of the National Day of Portugal on June 10. The decoration will be presented to Moreira at the Portuguese Embassy in Washington, D.C. in the fall. Click here to see the full list of awardees.

Kim Berghaus ’14, Earns Second Career America East All-Academic Team Honor

UMBC senior tennis standout Kim Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) was named to the 2014 America East Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team, the conference announced on May 23. Through the fall 2013 semester, Berghaus had posted a 3.84 grade-point average in physics and with minors in economics and mathematics. She earned President’s List honors by posting a 4.0 GPA during three of her first seven semesters as a Retriever. The co-captain of the 2014 squad received the athletic department’s Matt Skalsky Female Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award, which goes to the highest-performing scholar-athlete. UMBC Students Win Boren Scholarship

Jamila Ellis ’15, global studies, and Anna Kearns ’16, global studies and Asian studies, were awarded the prestigious Boren Scholarship for International Study. The Boren Scholarship for International Study allows students to study languages and cultures that are critical to US national security. Award recipients go on to work in federal agencies. Ellis will study Arabic in Jordan in order to learn more about the role of Middle Eastern and North African women in promoting conflict resolution in the region. Albin O. Kuhn Library Awarded $23,000 Grant

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) has awarded a 16-month, $23,000 grant to the Special Collections of the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery for the creation of collection level records for all archival collections Special Collections and the implementation of an Encoded Archival Description (EAD-XML) compliant workflow. Chief Curator Tom Beck, Archivist Lindsey Loeper, and Catalog Librarian Vicki Sipe will review, revise, and create collection level records and finding aids for the archival collections maintained by the Special Collections department in the Library.
