President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous share the following message with the UMBC community regarding the women’s lacrosse program: We want to provide the campus with information about the recent matter involving our women’s lacrosse team. (Our Student Affairs colleagues and others have been managing this matter throughout spring break.) On March 6, women’s lacrosse coaching staff learned of a troubling situation within the team. Communicating Climate 2015 (4/20)

The UMBC Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology invites the campus community to a symposium focused on communicating the results of scientific climate investigations. A panel of noted climate researchers will contribute their knowledge of Earth’s climate a discussion prompted by questions from the broader UMBC audience. This Communicating Climate symposium also celebrates the integration of art and science with renowned musician and composer Kenji Williams who will perform the multi-media presentation, “Beautiful Earth,” at 3:30 pm. The event will be held in the University Center Ballroom, April 20, 2015 from 12:30 PM – 6:00 PM.

CPR for the Healthcare Provider (5/28)

UMBC To Be Represented at U.S. Women’s Chess Championship

Junior Information Systems major, Nazi Paikidze, has been invited to compete in the invitation-only, U.S. Women’s Chess Championship, scheduled to take place at the Chess Club & Scholastic Center of St. Louis, March 31 – April 13, 2015. Ms. Paikidze, 21 and an International Chess Master, was the 2007 World Under-14 Girl’s Chess Champion, the 2008 World Under-16 Girl’s Chess Champion, and has multiple European Youth Championships to her name. Presidential Faculty and Staff Awards Ceremony (4/1)

The UMBC community will celebrate the accomplishments of this year’s campus- and system-wide award recipients at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, in the University Center Ballroom. A light lunch will follow. Release time will be granted for employees to take part in this event, and everyone is encouraged to attend. Performing Arts and Humanities Building Receives LEED Gold Designation

UMBC’s new Performing Arts and Humanities Building (PAHB) has been certified as a LEED Gold building. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a designation by the U.S. Green Building Council that recognizes buildings that are designed and built to conserve resources and promote clean, renewable energy. LEED Gold is the second highest designation a building can receive. The PAHB is UMBC’s second LEED Gold project and the University has committed to designing new construction to a minimum certification of LEED Silver.

Shared Services Centers Town Hall Meeting (3/23)

The Shared Services Centers (SSC) Team, which includes the Business Process Improvement, Communication, and Human Resources (BPI) Work Groups, as well as our Advisory Council, is moving forward with a go-live date of May 2015 for our initial two Phase I Shared Services Centers and many business process improvements. President of Portugal Honors Tony Moreira, Vice Provost of Academic Affairs

The president of Portugal has honored Antonio “Tony” Moreira, vice provost of academic affairs and professor of chemical and biochemical engineering, with the title Commander of the Order of Public Instruction. Ambassador Nuno Brito bestowed the honor upon Moreira this week at the Portuguese Embassy in Washington, D.C. At the ceremony, Moreira discussed how he works to foster connections between UMBC and Portugal. “In my almost 25 years working at UMBC… I felt that I need to support the youth of Portugal and provide them opportunities,” he said. UMBC’s Oumar Ballo Inks Deal With MLS’ Houston Dynamo

UMBC All-American soccer standout Oumar Ballo has been signed by the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer. The Dynamo selected Ballo in the second round with the 30th overall selection of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. Ballo helped lead UMBC to the NCAA Tournament College Cup (Final Four) in 2014 for the first time in program history. A two-time NSCAA-All American, Ballo was named America East Conference Defender of the Year in 2014. Ballo has appeared in two games this preseason. The Dynamo open their tenth season on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at BBVA Compass Stadium against Columbus Crew SC.

CHEE Names UMBC’s Student Affairs in 15+ Most Promising Workplaces List

The Center for Higher Education Enterprise (CHEE) named UMBC as one of its 15+ Most Promising Places to Work in 2015. UMBC was honored on the list along with other 16 other universities, including Florida State University and The Ohio State University. CHEE conducted the study as part of a partnership with Diverse: Issues in Higher Education and the American College Personnel Association. The list was created using a web-based survey that focused on workplace diversity, staffing practice, and work environment and examined categories such as family friendliness, salary and benefits, and professional development opportunities.
