Congratulations to Laila Shishineh, Assistant Director of FYE in the Office of Undergraduate Education, for receiving the USM Women’s Forum Award for Professional Development. The USM Women’s Forum Professional Staff Development Award provides funding to eligible staff members currently employed at USM institutions for a minimum of five (5)  years cumulative service. The USMWF wishes to encourage and enable staff to pursue training and/or professional development activities to enhance current job skills and/or seek career advancement opportunities. Funding can be used for non-credit courses and conferences. Times Higher Education recognizes UMBC as a top world university in 2015-16 rankings

Times Higher Education (THE) has named UMBC one of world’s top universities for the fourth consecutive year. THE World University Rankings “judge world class universities across all of their core missions—teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook,” utilizing metrics in 13 categories. The 2015-16 list of top 800 global universities includes 147 in the United States and highlights three in Maryland: UMBC, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland, College Park. Universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland were also well represented in the 2015-16 list. Jess Myers and Megan Tagle-Adams, UMBC Women’s Center, win prestigious awards from National Women’s Studies Association

UMBC’s Women’s Center Jess Myers and Megan Tagle-Adams were acknowledged by the NWSA Women’s Center Pre-Conference Award Committee with the prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award and Emerging Leader Award for their efforts and contributions toward advancing gender equity. 2015 Fall Opening Meeting Celebrates UMBC Achievements, Emphasizes Commitment to Inclusion

Faculty and staff gathered at the Fall Opening Meeting on August 20, 2015 to celebrate UMBC’s 2014-15 accomplishments and mark the start of a new academic year. The meeting featured remarks from incoming freshman, transfer, and graduate students, a speech by Provost Philip Rous, and the annual State of the University address by President Freeman Hrabowski. UMBC Faculty and Alumni Win “Innovator of the Year” Award

UMBC alumni and faculty were featured among The Daily Record’s 2015 Innovator of the Year winners. Innovator of the Year honors men and women who have created new products, services, or programs that improve their fields. UMBC’s winners include Chris Geddes, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, Greg Cangialosi ’96, English, and Isaac Kinde ’05, biological sciences. WeatherBugHome, an Innovator of the Year company winner, is headed by Bob Marshall ’88, mechanical engineering. UMBC’s Y Preschool Celebrates Grand Re-Opening

The Y Preschool at UMBC celebrated its grand re-opening on Tuesday, August 25 as the campus community gathered to reaffirm UMBC’s commitment to providing high-quality early childhood education. The event featured a tour of the new building, a visit by True Grit, and remarks by President Freeman Hrabowski, Associate Vice President of Human Resources Valerie Thomas, Y of Central Maryland CEO and President John Hoey, and parents of former UMBC preschool students. John Fritz, Instructional Technology, Discusses Course Feedback Study in PBS Newshour

A recent PBS Newshour report explored how universities are using big data to help students succeed. John Fritz, assistant vice-president for instructional technology, was interviewed about his study, which uses course feedback to improve student performance. Pres. Hrabowski Shares How UMBC Prepares Students for the Workforce in Pacific Standard

Pacific Standard, in collaboration with The Rockefeller Foundation and Stanford University’s Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, began “The Future of Work and Workers” project in August. The project asks social scientists, technology visionaries, activists, and other industry leaders to write about how the working world will change in the future. As the UMBC men’s soccer team gears up for another season, The Baltimore Sun featured Coach Pete Caringi for his excellent leadership of the Retrievers.
