MFA Thesis Exhibition in City Paper

The MFA Thesis Exhibition, now on display in the CADVC, was mentioned in an article by City Paper‘s Baynard Woods last week. The article highlighted UMBC’s well connected Visual Arts faculty, staff and MFA candidates in relation to the Baltimore arts community. Jessica Berman, English, Appointed to the Modern Language Association’s Publications Committee

Jessica Berman, Director of the Dresher Center for the Humanities and Professor of English, has been appointed to a three-year term to serve on the Modern Language Association’s (MLA) Publications Committee. The committee oversees all of MLA’s book publication programs, including its “Approaches to Teaching World Literature” and “Teaching Languages Literatures and Cultures” series. It assesses prospectuses and approves final manuscripts and it’s also charged with consulting on priorities and policies for the scholarly communication program and assisting with new initiatives in scholarly communication. Lia Purpura, English, in City Paper

Lia Purpura, English writer in residence, was featured in a Q&A in City Paper about her participation in Baltimore’s CityLit Festival and commented on the creative, artistic community at UMBC. “It’s a completely vibrant, alive place and diverse in every possible way—students from all over the world, of all ages and backgrounds,” Purpura said. “I don’t think I’ve ever had more rigorous or engaged discussions on complex issues with undergraduate classes. Kevin Wisniewski, LLC Doctoral Student, Named 2014 Michael Denker Chesapeake Chapter Fellow

Language, Literacy and Culture doctoral student Kevin A. Wisniewski was recently named a 2014 Michael Denker Chesapeake Chapter Fellow at the American Printing History Association. The fellowship is named after a former Chesapeake Chapter president, and it offers a one-year membership and active participation in the association’s various activities throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, including a presentation of original research at an upcoming symposium on the history of colonial printing and typography. Ellen Handler Spitz, Honors College, Participates in Community Development Program in Appalachia

Honors College Professor Ellen Handler Spitz recently traveled to Sewanee, Tennessee to the University of the South, where she was invited as a guest lecturer in the pioneering program, “Child, Family and Community Development in Rural Appalachia.” The program is sponsored by the University of the South, The Yale Child Study Center and Scholastic. A major goal of the program is to help children and families in poverty-stricken Appalachia while building community and fostering a rich cultural life. Project Mah Jongg, a collaborative, traveling exhibition that includes sound design by Tim Nohe, visual arts, along with original works by other nationally acclaimed artists, was featured in the Baltimore Jewish Times and the Baltimore Sun this week. Dance and Music Faculty Receive MSAC Individual Artist Awards

Several faculty members and alumna, Heather Moss ’07, English, were awarded Individual Artist Awards by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) this month. The Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Awards are monetary prizes given to a select group of artists each year. Maryland Art Place (MAP) is pleased to announce this year’s IMPRINT Artist, Steven. H. Silberg and his selected image, stemming from a series of work titled, “For Love (089-b)”. In its third year, MAP honors one singular contemporary artist who has demonstrated excellence within their selected media through its annual print reproduction program, IMPRINT. Anna Shields, MLLI, Awarded Henry Luce Foundation/American Council of Learned Societies Grant

Anna Shields, an associate professor of modern languages, linguistics and intercultural communication, is part of a three-person team that has been awarded a Henry Luce Foundation/American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) grant for a collaborative reading workshop in 2015. Shields, along with two colleagues at Cornell University and the University at Albany, were co-organizers of the grant, which was submitted in November. They were awarded $10,000 for the reading workshop, at which they will be studying the historical development of what “literary competence” meant in the Tang dynasty, looking at historical and literary texts from the 7th-9th centuries. In the latest essay for his Race Stories column for the New York Times, Maurice Berger, CADVC, discusses “the power behind a remarkable interactive website called ‘Mirror of Race,’ which uses 19th century photographs depicting people of various races in situations that are often ambiguous in their content and intent.” Mirror of Race displays these photographs typical to the way in which they may be shown in a gallery setting, but in the absence of explanation and description.
