Dr. Yaqoob obtained a B.A. in Physics from Oxford University, U.K., in 1983, and a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Leicester, U.K., in 1990. Since then, Dr. Yaqoob has held research and teaching positions at various institutes, and has published papers on various topics, principally in the field of X-ray astronomy, and has extensive experience working on data analysis and support for a number of X-ray astronomy missions. Dr. Yaqoob is currently a senior research scientist at NASA/GSFC and UMBC, with the Center for Space Science and Technology (CSST), prior to which he was a Principal Research Scientist at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Yaqoob has mentored and supervised students from the undergraduate to Ph. D. levels, as well as post-doctoral researchers.
Research interests
Dr. Yaqoob has published papers in refereed journals on various topics that include: Observational and theoretical work on physical processes in black-hole accretion disk systems and their environment (mostly active galactic nuclei (AGN) and quasars but including X-ray binary systems); X-ray diagnostics of black-hole spin, and improvement of the robustness of spectral deconvolution of distant-matter components; Development and applications of techniques to separate the global and line-of-sight column densities in X-ray sources; Blazars (including TeV observations); X-ray and UV absorption and photoionized outflows and inflows in AGN and quasars; high spectral-resolution X-ray spectroscopy; power spectra, spectral and temporal variability; normal and starburst galaxies; AGN unification; low-luminosity AGN; X-ray background; coordinated multi-wavelength and multi-mission monitoring campaigns of AGN; a high~$z$ cluster of galaxies; absorption in the warm/hot intergalactic medium (WHIGM); statistics; analysis methods; numerical and monte-carlo modeling of astrophysical processes; X-ray optics, raytracing.
