About
Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, a Ph.D. graduate from the University of Delhi, excels in material science and electrochemistry. His expertise spans advanced materials design, electrochemical biosensors, and renewable energy storage, crucial for sustainable power. As a former JST CREST fellow and Assistant Professor at Shinshu University, Japan, he pioneered affordable isotope isolation methods for cancer detection. Currently, as an assistant research scientist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Dr. Kumar focuses on developing wearable energy generators, CO2 sensors and bio-sustainable wood microfluidic carbon nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors for environmental monitoring, aligning with the goal of advancing healthcare affordability.
Research interests
1. Development of a bio-sustainable polymer-metal oxide nanocomposite-based microfluidic sensor system for electrochemical detection of nitrate/phosphate in water and soil.2. Development of portable and wearable polymer nanocomposite-based adsorption sensor for Noninvasive continuous transcutaneous monitoring of CO2.3. Development of carbon nanotubes based nanomechanical energy-powered sensors4. Development of novel polymeric thin films for equilibrium adsorption passive sampling (using established sorbents like activated carbon and solid phase extraction media and novel polymers embedded with immobilized serum albumin proteins known to bind and serve as transporters of PFAS in animals).5. Test the ability to measure PFAS compounds in natural surface water and evaluate the robustness of the sampling material for long-term field deployments.
Teaching interests
My educational philosophy centers on the belief that education is a transformative journey that empowers individuals and fosters a lifelong love for learning. I firmly assert that educators play a pivotal role in shaping the future of their students by not only imparting knowledge but also instilling critical thinking skills, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility to society. My educational objectives encompass the following key principles:
Excellence in Learning: My foremost goal is to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of chemistry while nurturing a culture of academic excellence. I strive to inspire students to be inquisitive, analytical, and adept problem solvers who are not just consumers of knowledge but active contributors to the field.
Active and Engaged Learning: I advocate for active learning methodologies that encourage student engagement and participation. By incorporating interactive discussions, group activities, and hands-on experiments, I aim to create an environment where students are actively involved in the learning process.
Research Integration: I see immense value in integrating research into the educational experience, particularly at the undergraduate level. Offering students opportunities to engage in research projects not only enhances their comprehension of theoretical concepts but also ignites their passion for scientific exploration.
