About
Dr. Md Tariqul Islam is an Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity in the Department of Information Systems at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Dr. Islam joined UMBC in Fall 2025 after serving as an Assistant Professor of Trustworthy Cyberspace at Syracuse University iSchool. His academic journey started in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he earned his B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Dhaka. He later pursued graduate studies at the University of Kentucky, completing his M.S. in 2016 and my Ph.D. in 2020. Dr. Islam's research explores the security and privacy of distributed computing systems, with a particular focus on blockchain, cloud, edge, and vehicular networks. He enjoys designing algorithms, protocols, and frameworks that not only advance theory but also address real-world challenges faced by industry and society. Beyond research, he is passionate about teaching and mentoring. Dr. Islam strives to help students bridge classroom learning with real-world problems in cybersecurity and distributed systems, preparing them to think critically and innovate in an ever-evolving digital world.Research interests
