About
Dr. Patricia A. Young is Professor in the Department of Education at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. She has served other administrative roles such as Department Chair, Special Assistant for Strategy & Innovation and Program Director of Elementary Education. Dr. Young earned her Ph.D. in Education: Language, Literacy & Culture from the University of California Berkeley. Her masters degree was acquired from the California State University Hayward (East Bay) in Education: Curriculum. Dr. Young's undergraduate degree is from New York Institute of Technology in Communication Arts (Television Production).Research interests
Dr. Young's present research focuses on culture and the design of information and communication technologies and educational technologies made by and for African Americans. Dr. Young built Proticy, a mobile learning analytics software that can improve teaching and learning. She was awarded two grants related to computational thinking for early learners from the Sherman Center for Early Learning in Urban Communities and Maryland Center for Computing Education. Her book Human Specialization in Design and Technology: The Current Wave for Learning, Culture, Industry and Beyond (2021) advocates for innovation as the way to improve industry, education and human performance. This book is a winner of the 2021 Outstanding Publication Award for a Book from the Culture, Learning and Technology Division of the Association for Educational Communications & Technology.Teaching interests
