Duties:    This work study position supports the daily activities of the Women's Center at UMBC (http://womenscenter.umbc.edu/) and works closely with both the coordinator and director of the Women's Center staff. Students applying for this position should have a general understanding of feminism, LGBTQ issues, and social justice and value gender equity. All members of the Women’s Center assist with general operations (i.e. greeting & tracking visitors, providing resources, managing office calendar, answering phones) Each student staff member also is required to plan, advertise (via myUMBC, social media, and flyers) and execute programming for the Women's Center under the supervision of professional staff members. This is a “front line” office position. Staff member must be able to attend weekly staff meetings and full-day training that occurs prior to the beginning of the fall semester.
     
Required skills:    Students applying for this position must have: -General appreciation for and understanding of the purpose for a university women’s center -General appreciation and knowledge of social justice values and practices and issues related to women/gender issues and the LGBTQ community (it is recommended that students have -taken a GWST class before applying) -A willingness to address sensitive personal and social issues independently and through interaction with others Students applying for this position must have the ability to: -Communicate effectively with and be respectful of students, faculty, staff and visitors (in person and via email communication) -Create, edit and produce letters and other documents in Word and Publisher. -Must be able to work independently, meet deadlines, and set priorities for multiple projects
