The Office of Summer & Winter Programs awards a limited number of full and partial scholarships to UMBC degree-seeking students who have a high GPA and are close to graduating. Financial need (determined by the 2016/2017 FAFSA) and the percentage of courses taken at UMBC are also considered.
Full scholarships awards
Full scholarships cover tuition up to 4 credits for ONE summer session course, based on UMBC’s in-state undergraduate or graduate tuition rate.

If you are registered for MORE than one UMBC summer session course, the scholarship will be applied to the ONE course carrying the most credits, and you will be responsible for the tuition and fees related to other course(s) that you are enrolled in. For example, if you are registered for TWO 3 credit courses and a 1.5 credit course, the scholarship will ONLY cover the cost of tuition for ONE of the 3 credit courses.
Partial scholarship awards
Partial scholarships cover HALF of up to 4 credits of the tuition for ONE summer session course, based on UMBC’s in-state undergraduate or graduate tuition rate.

Important scholarship details
Scholarships are competitively awarded. Meeting the minimum qualifications DOES NOT guarantee a scholarship. Students are responsible for any fees associated with the course. Student who are NOT classified as a Maryland resident are also responsible for their remaining out-of-state tuition charges. Scholarships are only awarded for UMBC summer session courses, and must be used at UMBC during summer session 2017.
Minimum application qualifications and requirements
All applicants must be UMBC degree-seeking students, and must submit an unofficial UMBC transcript indicating that they will have earned at least 100 undergraduate credits by the end of the spring 2017 semester. Graduate students must show that they will have earned at least 23 graduate credits by the end of the spring 2017 semester. Your transcript must also indicate that your CURRENT UMBC cumulative grade point average is 3.20 or higher. And you must also have a 2016/2017 FAFSA form on file with the UMBC Office of Financial Aid, or provide written documentation as to why you do not.
Applications that do not meet the minimum qualifications and requirements are not considered by the Scholarship Review Committee.
Application deadline date and notification of awards
The deadline for eligible UMBC degree-seeking students to apply is 5:00 pm on May 5, 2017. An email will be sent to the address listed on your scholarship application no later than Friday, May 12 to inform you if you have received a summer session scholarship. All decisions by the Scholarship Review Committee are final.
The Grit Going Scholarship application deadline has passed. The scholarship review committee will meet next week, and decisions will be emailed to all who applied no later than Friday, May 12.
II. The Special Programs Scholarship
UMBC’s Office of Summer, Winter & Special Programs will offer a limited number of summer scholarships to selected students enrolled in UMBC’s Special Programs (Discover Baltimore; Culture & Social Justice; or Health & Social Inequalities) summer courses. The program-specific scholarship will cover the tuition cost of a three credit course, based on UMBC’s in-state undergraduate tuition rate. Students are responsible for summer session fees, and any remaining out-of-state tuition costs, if applicable.
Students with an active interest in the courses and topics covered in UMBC’s summer Special Programs are encouraged to apply. Scholarships are not transferable, and are only available for eligible students enrolled in designated Special Programs courses in Summer Session 2017.
- Current UMBC students (registered in spring 2017) or incoming new UMBC students (admitted for fall 2017) who enroll in a summer course that is part of UMBC’s Special Programs
- A cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher
- Submit an online application that includes a personal statement (200 – 400 words) explaining why you want to enroll in the chosen course
- Register in at least one 3-credit course offered through UMBC’s summer Special Programs by May 23 (Session I) or July 3 (Session II)
Application, Deadlines and notification of Awards
The Special Programs Scholarship application deadline has passed. Scholarship recipients will be notified via email by May 24. Scholarships will only be awarded to students who are enrolled in a Special Programs course by the deadline dates above. .
