DESCRIPTION:UMBC Theatre presents The Wonderful Wizard of Oz\, adapted by Jacqueline Lawton and directed by Joseph W. Ritsch. \nLife in modern day Baltimore has been a bit boring for Dorothy and her little dog Toto. Until one day\, when a cyclone swoops in and takes them “over the rainbow” to the wonderful and magical land of Oz. With the Scarecrow\, the Tin Man\, and the Cowardly Lion\, Dorothy sets off on the adventure of a lifetime down the yellow brick road to the Emerald City. DESCRIPTION:Join us for Baltimore Dance Project\, a company known for edgy collaborations with composers\, directors\, sound artists\, video artists\, engineers\, and technologists\, and for integrating visual media and technology in riveting dance performances! In the loosely thematic concert entitled Venerations\, professional dancers from the Baltimore area and beyond will perform new and reimagined works by Ann Sofie Clemmensen (the interdisciplinary My Dear Cassandra)\, Elizabeth Johnson (About No/Thing)\, Sandra Lacy (Giving Up the Ghost)\, and Jill Vasbinder (a response to Merce Cunningham’s 1979 dance film 50 Looks). Special guests Orange Grove Dance (Colette Krogol and Matthew Reeves) will present their dance film Organism and also premiere a new work. \n\nTwo performances in the Proscenium Theatre:\nFriday\, February 6\, 8 p.m.\nSaturday\, February 7\, 8 p.m. \n$20 reserved seating; $10 for UMBC students\, faculty\, and staff; $15 for senior citizens and non-UMBC students. SUMMARY:Shakespeare in Harlem
DESCRIPTION:UMBC Theatre presents Shakespeare in Harlem by Langston Hughes\, adapted and directed by Gerrad Alex Taylor\, a university-professional collaboration between UMBC Theatre and the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company. \nThe year 2025 marks the centennial of the Harlem Renaissance\, perhaps the largest cultural and artistic American movement of the 20th century. In celebration\, the Department of Theatre will amplify the work of Black and African American theatre-makers and our engagement with the Baltimore theatre community by mounting an adaptation of Shakespeare in Harlem by Langston Hughes. \nA rare gem from Langston Hughes\, this collection of monologue poems revives the rhythms of jazz\, the blues\, and the pulse of the Harlem Renaissance—its love\, struggles\, and street-corner spirit. In director Gerrad Alex Taylor’s adaptation\, Hughes’ words come alive in a dynamic full-length play\, blending poetry\, music\, and dance for an immersive journey into the world he so vividly celebrated. \nThe production process will include a UMBC residency of Chesapeake Shakespeare Company’s Black Classical Acting Ensemble in the Fall of 2025\, culminating in a two-week run of the play performed by a cast of professionals and students.
