SUMMARY:Out of the Picture | Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Visual Arts presents screening of Out of the Picture\, the first documentary film to examine the vital world of American art criticism. The event will feature a post-screening Q&A and discussion with director Mary Louise Schumacher\, offering audiences a unique look into the making of the documentary and the essential role critics play in shaping modern culture. \nDirected by University of Maryland\, College Park alumna and former Milwaukee Journal Sentinel critic Mary Louise Schumacher\, the film follows five influential writers — Carolina Miranda (Los Angeles Times)\, Hrag Vartanian (Hyperallergic)\, Jen Graves (The Stranger)\, Jeneé Osterheldt (The Boston Globe)\, and independent critic Seph Rodney — navigating a decade of profound cultural reckoning and historic transformation across both art and media. \n\nMary Louise Schumacher is a journalist\, critic and filmmaker based in Portland\, Maine. She is the executive director of the Dorothea and Leo Rabkin Foundation\, which gives an annual prize for excellence in arts journalism to writers. She was the longtime art and architecture critic for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel\, was the the 2019 Clarice Smith Distinguished Critic at the Smithsonian\, and the 2017 Arts & Culture Fellow with the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University\, where she spent a year studying documentary film\, among other things. Her bylines have appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, ARTnews\, Hyperallergic\, Nieman Reports and Milwaukee Magazine. Out of the Picture is her first film. \n\nAdmission is free. SUMMARY:UMBC Gamelan Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Music presents the UMBC Gamelan Ensemble under the direction of Michelle Purdy. \nThe ensemble performs on a central Javanese gamelan\, a gong-chime orchestra of Indonesia. Although most of the instruments of the gamelan are made of bronze\, the ensemble also includes drums\, xylophones\, bamboo flutes\, and plucked and bowed string instruments. \nThe ensemble also performs on a Balinese gamelan angklung\, one of many types of gong-chime orchestras from the island of Bali\, Indonesia. This small ensemble\, made up of gongs\, single-octave metallophones\, drums\, cymbals\, and flutes\, is tuned to a four-tone slendro scale. \n\nAdmission is free\, but tickets are required.
