Kuhn Library Gallery presents “They Fight with Cameras”

In conjunction with the exhibition They Fight With Cameras: Walter Rosenblum in WWII from D-Day to Dachau, the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents public programs on Wednesday, November 11. A 12 pm film screening of Walter Rosenblum: In Search of Pitt Street will be followed at 6 pm by a talk given by Nina Rosenblum, film producer for Deadalus Productions, Inc. Admission is free. Friends of the Library & Gallery Theatre with Dinner (3/28)

The Friends of the Library & Gallery presents Theatre with Dinner, which will begin at 5 p.m. on the 7th floor of the Library on March 28, 2015. The play will be These Shining Lives, by Melanie Marnich, presented by the UMBC Department of Theatre and directed by Nyalls Hartman. “Visual Music”: A UMBC Faculty Concert with Video will take place on March 25, 2015 at 4 p.m. in the Library Gallery. This event in the Friends of the Library & Gallery “ArtsNotes” / “MusicNotes” series. Please join Lisa Cella, flutist, and Stephen Bradley, inter-media artist, for a live concert of contemporary flute repertoire with original video art created specifically for each piece. This experimental flute performance is the culmination of a project begun a year ago. January 26 – March 25 A Stirring Song Sung Heroic: African Americans from Slavery to Freedom, 1619 to 1865, Photographs by William Earle Williams Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery The history of American slavery is considered in A Stirring Song Sung Heroic, an exhibition of 80 black and white silver gelatin prints by photographer William Earle Williams. These images document mostly anonymous, unheralded, and uncelebrated places in the New World—from the Caribbean to North America—where Americans black and white determined the meaning of freedom. Tom Beck, Library, Speaks at the Library of Congress

Tom Beck, Chief Curator, Library & Gallery, recently spoke at the Library of Congress commemorating the photographs of David Seymour. He is a biographer of the famous photographer who in 1947 co-founded Magnum Photos with Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and George Rodger. Magnum Photos is the internationally important photojournalist’s cooperative whose members are among the finest photographers in the world.The Library of Congress program occurred on the 103rd anniversary of the birth of Seymour and celebrated the donation of 112 of Seymour photographs to the Library of Congress.

Albin O. Kuhn Library Awarded $23,000 Grant

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) has awarded a 16-month, $23,000 grant to the Special Collections of the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery for the creation of collection level records for all archival collections Special Collections and the implementation of an Encoded Archival Description (EAD-XML) compliant workflow. Chief Curator Tom Beck, Archivist Lindsey Loeper, and Catalog Librarian Vicki Sipe will review, revise, and create collection level records and finding aids for the archival collections maintained by the Special Collections department in the Library. Tom Beck, Chief Curator, Library & Gallery, was recently quoted in The Baltimore Sun about the Library Gallery’s N. Jay Jaffee exhibit. The exhibit highlights a talented artist who has not received much recognition. “Jaffee never worked as a professional photographer,” says Tom Beck, chief curator at UMBC. “His career was in printing. Craig Saper, LLC, Named Bearman Foundation Chair in Entrepreneurship

Craig Saper, professor and chair of Language, Literacy, and Culture (LLC), has been named the Bearman Foundation Chair in Entrepreneurship. “Dr. Saper is a scholar of large achievement and great energy, whose talents and interests make him a superb choice for the Bearman Foundation Chair in Entrepreneurship,” said John Jeffries, dean of the college of arts, humanities, and social sciences (CAHSS). Robin Moskal & Joyce Tenney Appointed Associate Directors of the Library

From Larry Wilt, Director of the Library I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Robin Moskal and Joyce Tenney as Associate Directors, in recognition of their increasing roles in the management and leadership of the Library. Robin Moskal first came to UMBC in 1989 as an Assistant Reference Librarian. Since that time she has held several positions at UMBC, most notably as head of Collection Management and Interlibrary Loan. Since 2008, she has served on an acting basis as the supervisor of Library Accounting & Receiving and of the Reference Department.
