Why Major in Sociology?

With a sociology major from UMBC, you will discover how you can pursue your passion to create better outcomes for society.

Society shapes the world – from how we live, to how we treat each other and how laws get passed. A bachelor’s degree in sociology provides you with a critical lens that helps you create stronger communities, build better support systems, and influence positive societal change.

As a student in UMBC’s Sociology program, you’ll be challenged to delve deeper into the analysis of human behavior through the use of empirical data. This will be achieved through interactive and experiential learning methods such as field research and outreach programs.
