SUMMARY:Lewis Hine in Maryland
DESCRIPTION:The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Lewis Hine in Maryland\, on display from August 24 through December 18. The exhibition will be accompanied by Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso. \nFrom 1908 to 1924\, documentary photographer Lewis Hine (American\, 1874–1940) traveled throughout the United States\, using his camera to document child labor on behalf of the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). He photographed children working in coal mines\, cotton mills\, farms\, tenements\, and city streets. The NCLC used Hine’s photographs and eyewitness reports to support its campaigns for labor regulation and reform. His images appeared in pamphlets\, posters\, traveling exhibitions\, and lantern-slide presentations across the country. Ultimately\, these searing photographs helped shape labor legislation in the United States and established a model for documentary photography. \nIn July 1909\, Hine visited Maryland\, photographing child workers at Bottomley berry farms in Anne Arundel County and at the J. S. Farrand Packing Company in Baltimore. Drawn from UMBC’s Photography Collections\, this exhibition explores the places and people behind these photographs. A selection of Hine’s most iconic and enduring images situates his Maryland work within the broader context of his documentary project. The exhibition also examines how Hine’s photographs functioned as tools of visual persuasion\, working in tandem with captions\, pamphlets\, slogans\, and posters to shape public opinion — and ultimately legislation — regarding the changing role of children in the workforce and in American society. \nThis exhibition commemorates MD250 and the U.S. Semiquincentennial\, exploring themes foundational to the nation’s history\, including immigration and migration\, the power of documentary photographs\, and social justice. \n\nPublic Programs \nCuratorial tour and opening reception\nThursday September 17\, 5 p.m. \nPanel Discussion: Food and Labor in Maryland\nThursday October 22\, 6 p.m.\, followed by a reception\nThis event is co-organized with Department of American Studies and the Orser Center for Public Humanities at UMBC. \nClosing reception\nThursday December 3\, 6 p.m. \nAll public program are free and open to the public. \n\nLisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso \nLewis Hine in Maryland is accompanied by an installation of two works from artist Lisa Oppenheim’s Spine series\, in which she appropriates images by Lewis Hine from the Library of Congress. Enlarged to life size\, the photographs depict the backs of adolescent textile workers whose bodies were curved and misshapen by their labor. Oppenheim has bifurcated each image along the vertical axis of the spine\, emphasizing the physical impact of repetitive work on the body. Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso places Oppenheim’s works in dialogue with a selection of photographs from UMBC’s Lewis Hine Collection\, displayed with their versos — or backs — visible to viewers. \nIn 2023\, with support from a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grant\, Special Collections staff undertook a major initiative to rehouse the Lewis Hine photographs and digitize their versos. The backs of the photographs bear captions\, annotations\, and inscriptions by Hine and others employed by the NCLC\, testifying to their use in the organization’s publications and promotional campaigns. Together\, these materials reveal the many forms of labor documented in Hine’s work and the ways that labor is imprinted upon — and remains legible within — the bodies of his subjects. \n \nLisa Oppenheim was born in 1975 in New York\, New York. She received a BA in art and semiotics from Brown University in 1998 and an MFA in film and video from Bard College in 2001. She attended the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program for studio art in 2003. Oppenheim’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at MUDAM\, The Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg (2025); Huis Marseille\, Amsterdam (2024)\, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2017)\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (2016). In 2014\, Oppenheim was the recipient of the AIMIA|AGO Photography Prize from the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Shpilman International Photography Prize from the Israel Museum. Her work is held in the permanent collections of The J. Paul Getty Museum\, Los Angeles\, Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, San Francisco\, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York\, Santa Barbara Museum of Art\, Santa Barbara\, Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, Carnegie Museum of Art\, Pittsburgh\, among others. SUMMARY:Somewhere Over the Rainbow of Row Homes\, We Fly
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Art\, Design\, and Visual Culture presents Somewhere Over the Rainbow of Row Homes\, We Fly\, an intergenerational group exhibition organized by curator Angela N. Carroll. On view from August 25 through November 24\, the exhibition features artists based in or connected to Baltimore\, exploring the city’s cultural landscape through experimental and interdisciplinary practices. The exhibition title is inspired by the narrative poetry of multidisciplinary artist NIA JUNE. \nSomewhere Over the Rainbow of Row Homes\, We Fly includes work by Kelvin Bulluck\, Roy Crosse\, Brianna Faulkner\, Darrius Fox\, Lehna Huie\, Jeffrey Kent\, Ada Pinkston\, Kim Rice\, Margaret Rorison\, Ernest Shaw\, Shan Wallace\, and Jasmine Gabrielle Washington\, and the presentation of a filmic work produced by the collective NIA JUNE + Kirby Griffin + APoetNamedNate. \nThrough serial compositions\, photographic triptychs\, floating installations\, and cinema\, the participating artists examine themes of home\, memory\, and community. Her latest effort\, Jerrell Gibbs: No Solace in the Shade at the Brandywine Museum of Art is accompanied by a monograph published by Rizzoli New York. As a scholar\, Carroll has contributed critical writing to exhibition catalogs published by The Baltimore Museum of Art\, The Des Moines Art Center\, The Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum\, The National Museum of Women in the Arts\, Nerman MOCA\, and the CueArt Foundation\, among many others. These writings evidence her significant contribution to contemporary art historical discourse. SUMMARY:Whistling Hens
DESCRIPTION:Showcasing two premieres and a narrative song cycle for soprano and clarinet\, the Whistling Hens duo shares stories about women\, by women. Haiku Journey (Jenni Brandon) encourages loving stewardship of our planet\, while Lingerie (Victoria Bond) bemoans frustrating aspects of women’s undergarments. The 17th Letter of the Living (Mojgan Misaghi) tells the story of Táhirih\, executed for unveiling herself in front of a council of men\, alongside Cradle Song and The Journals of Katherine Campbell\, chronicling the lives of women who changed the world through activism as artists\, healers\, and politicians. \n\nWhistling Hens® was founded by soprano Jennifer Piazza-Pick (Queens University of Charlotte) and clarinetist Natalie Groom (UMBC\, Towson University) to perform and commission music by women composers to create a financially and artistically equitable future for women in music. The duo’s name was plucked from a quote by a male music critic who wrote in the New York Times in 1918\, “women composers are at best whistling hens.” \nWhistling Hens has premiered 41 pieces and commissioned 16 compositions\, 10 transcriptions\, the Whistling Hens Women Composer Coloring Book\, and inspired 26 dedicated works. Whistling Hens has released two albums\, Big Crass Monster (2025) and Reacting to the Landscape (2022)\, presenting numerous world premiere recordings featuring many of their commissioned works. \n\nThis event is sponsored by UMBC’s Department of Music. \n\n$15 general admission\, $10 seniors\, $5 students. SUMMARY:Humanities Forum — Jodi A. Byrd: Indigenomicon: American Indians\, Video Games\, and the Structures of Dispossession
DESCRIPTION:Humanities Forum Lecture with Jodi A. Byrd\nIndigenomicon: American Indians\, Video Games\, and the Structures of Dispossession\nThis event is part of the Fall 2026 Humanities Forum \nSettler colonial studies and Indigenous studies are often assumed to be the same intellectual project. In Indigenomicon\, Jodi A. Byrd examines the differences between the two fields by bringing video game studies and Indigenous studies into conversation with Black studies\, queer studies\, and Indigenous feminist critique. Byrd theorizes “the image of the law of the Indigenous” as structuring dispossession in games including Assassin’s Creed\, Animal Crossing\, BioShock Infinite\, and Demon Souls. They demonstrate how games and play might reveal histories of slavery\, genocide\, and theft of Indigenous lands even as their structures obscure Indigenous spatial and embodied practices that prioritize relationships with land\, water\, plants\, and spirits. With ground and relationality defined as key concepts\, Byrd centers Indigenous visions of dystopias to reveal how game spaces encode settler structures of governance even as the design of games might yet provide vital modes of resistance to Indigenous erasure. \n\nJodi A. Byrd is a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation and professor of Race\, Diaspora\, and Indigeneity at the University of Chicago. Their research focuses on indigenous studies\, indigenous feminist and queer studies\, and video game studies. Their book The Transit of Empire: Indigenous Critiques of Colonialism (University of Minnesota Press) won the 2011 Best First Book of the Year award from the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association\, and the 2012 Wordcraft Circle Award for Academic Work of the Year. Byrd also co-edits the Northwestern University Press’ Critical Insurgencies series. Prior to joining the University of Chicago\, they were a Professor of Literatures in English at Cornell University. DESCRIPTION:Humanities Forum Lecture with Kim Bowes\nThe Economic Lives of Rome’s Ninety Percent\nThis Ancient Studies Week Lecture is part of the Fall 2026 Humanities Forum \nHow did the majority of Romans get by? What were their strategies for survival? This talk describes how the Roman world created a set of bitter challenges and opportunistic hustles for everyone from farmers and craftspeople to day laborers and slaves. Working people co-produced a consumer revolution\, making and buying everything from fine pottery to children’s toys. Many of the poorest working people lived with — but not on — wages. And Romans’ most daunting challenge was the struggle to save. These economies of survival were shared by a wide swath of people\, blurring the lines between genders\, ages\, and legal status. \n\nKim Bowes is BFC Presidential Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Author of Surviving Rome: The Economic Lives of the Ninety Percent (Princeton)\, her research and field projects address the economic lives of working people. Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Guggenheim Foundation. \n\nAdmission is free. \n\nThis annual lecture is organized by the Department of Ancient Studies and part of the Dresher Center’s Humanities Forum. \n\nUMBC is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for all faculty\, staff\, students\, and visitors. Carroll\, the Center for Art\, Design\, and Visual Culture presents Brandon Woody in concert\, alongside a public projection of The Unveiling of God/a love letter to my forefathers by NIA JUNE + Kirby Griffin + APoetNamedNate. \n\nBrandon Woody is a Baltimore-born\, Blue Note Records trumpeter and composer whose music explores themes of love\, resilience\, and community. Since releasing his acclaimed 2025 debut album\, For The Love Of It All\, Woody has been hailed by The New York Times and The Washington Post for his expressive tone and self-assured artistry. He has performed at major global venues\, including the Newport and North Sea Jazz Festivals\, and collaborated with artists such as Robert Glasper and Solange Knowles\, as well as international brands like Calvin Klein and Vogue. Deeply rooted in his hometown\, Woody continues to use music as a tool for healing and connection through both his performances and dedicated community work. \n\nNIA JUNE is a published poet\, filmmaker\, and arts educator recognized as Baltimore magazine’s Best Poet and Best Filmmaker. Her directorial work\, including the award-winning A Black Girl’s Country and The Unveiling of God\, has been acquired by the Baltimore Museum of Art and screened internationally. A proud Baltimore native\, she is a recipient of the Rubys Artist Grant and the Saul Zaentz Fellowship for her impactful contributions to the local art community. \nKirby Griffin is a self-taught filmmaker and photographer from West Baltimore who specializes in visual storytelling that centers on local culture and arts. His documentary and narrative work explores themes of healing and history\, capturing projects ranging from live music to short films. His collaborative work\, including A Black Girl’s Country and The Unveiling of God\, is currently held in the Baltimore Museum of Art’s collection. \nAPoetNamedNate is a multifaceted Baltimore-based artist whose work spans poetry\, music production\, filmmaking\, and creative direction. He is well-known for producing the Charm City Slam and for his co-directing and musical contributions to award-winning short films showcased internationally. DESCRIPTION:The Baltimore Classical Guitar Society presents SoloDuo\, featuring classical guitarists Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli. \nSoloDuo has performed throughout Europe\, Asia\, the United States\, Canada and Latin America\, and have been acclaimed everywhere — from New York’s Carnegie Hall to Seoul’s Sejong Chamber Hall\, from Kiev’s Hall of Columns to Vienna’s Konzerthaus — as an extraordinary ensemble. About one of their performances\, The Washington Post wrote\, “the duo’s playing was nothing less than rapturous — profound and unforgettable musicianship of the highest order.” \nIn addition to classic\, romantic and modern repertoire\, Mela and Micheli — joined by lutenist Massimo Lonardi — have extensively explored Italian music from the 17th and 18th centuries for baroque guitar and theorbo. The have recorded works by Alessandro Scarlatti\, Mauro Giuliani\, Ferdinand Rebay\, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and other composers for the Naxos\, Brilliant\, Contrastes\, Kookaburra\, Mel Bay\, and Stradivarius labels. \nSince 2015\, they have been artists in residence at the University of Colorado Boulder. \n\nTickets are $30–$35 and are available through BCGS. \n\nLinehan Concert Hall\, located in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building\, is easy to visit\, with plenty of free parking.
