SUMMARY:Lewis Hine in Maryland
DESCRIPTION:The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Lewis Hine in Maryland\, on display from August 24 through December 18. The exhibition will be accompanied by Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso. \nFrom 1908 to 1924\, documentary photographer Lewis Hine (American\, 1874–1940) traveled throughout the United States\, using his camera to document child labor on behalf of the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). He photographed children working in coal mines\, cotton mills\, farms\, tenements\, and city streets. The NCLC used Hine’s photographs and eyewitness reports to support its campaigns for labor regulation and reform. His images appeared in pamphlets\, posters\, traveling exhibitions\, and lantern-slide presentations across the country. Ultimately\, these searing photographs helped shape labor legislation in the United States and established a model for documentary photography. \nIn July 1909\, Hine visited Maryland\, photographing child workers at Bottomley berry farms in Anne Arundel County and at the J. S. Farrand Packing Company in Baltimore. Drawn from UMBC’s Photography Collections\, this exhibition explores the places and people behind these photographs. A selection of Hine’s most iconic and enduring images situates his Maryland work within the broader context of his documentary project. The exhibition also examines how Hine’s photographs functioned as tools of visual persuasion\, working in tandem with captions\, pamphlets\, slogans\, and posters to shape public opinion — and ultimately legislation — regarding the changing role of children in the workforce and in American society. \nThis exhibition commemorates MD250 and the U.S. Semiquincentennial\, exploring themes foundational to the nation’s history\, including immigration and migration\, the power of documentary photographs\, and social justice. \n\nPublic Programs \nCuratorial tour and opening reception\nThursday September 17\, 5 p.m. \nPanel Discussion: Food and Labor in Maryland\nThursday October 22\, 6 p.m.\, followed by a reception\nThis event is co-organized with Department of American Studies and the Orser Center for Public Humanities at UMBC. \nClosing reception\nThursday December 3\, 6 p.m. \nAll public program are free and open to the public. \n\nLisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso \nLewis Hine in Maryland is accompanied by an installation of two works from artist Lisa Oppenheim’s Spine series\, in which she appropriates images by Lewis Hine from the Library of Congress. Enlarged to life size\, the photographs depict the backs of adolescent textile workers whose bodies were curved and misshapen by their labor. Oppenheim has bifurcated each image along the vertical axis of the spine\, emphasizing the physical impact of repetitive work on the body. Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso places Oppenheim’s works in dialogue with a selection of photographs from UMBC’s Lewis Hine Collection\, displayed with their versos — or backs — visible to viewers. \nIn 2023\, with support from a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grant\, Special Collections staff undertook a major initiative to rehouse the Lewis Hine photographs and digitize their versos. The backs of the photographs bear captions\, annotations\, and inscriptions by Hine and others employed by the NCLC\, testifying to their use in the organization’s publications and promotional campaigns. Together\, these materials reveal the many forms of labor documented in Hine’s work and the ways that labor is imprinted upon — and remains legible within — the bodies of his subjects. \n \nLisa Oppenheim was born in 1975 in New York\, New York. She received a BA in art and semiotics from Brown University in 1998 and an MFA in film and video from Bard College in 2001. She attended the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program for studio art in 2003. Oppenheim’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at MUDAM\, The Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg (2025); Huis Marseille\, Amsterdam (2024)\, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2017)\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (2016). In 2014\, Oppenheim was the recipient of the AIMIA|AGO Photography Prize from the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Shpilman International Photography Prize from the Israel Museum. Her work is held in the permanent collections of The J. Paul Getty Museum\, Los Angeles\, Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, San Francisco\, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York\, Santa Barbara Museum of Art\, Santa Barbara\, Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, Carnegie Museum of Art\, Pittsburgh\, among others. She lives and works in Brooklyn. \nImage: Lisa Oppenheim\, Correct posture for 4663. Need for advice of examining physician\, 2016. SUMMARY:Arts Alumni Spotlight: Hannah Kelly and Franki Graham
DESCRIPTION:Two accomplished UMBC arts alumni\, Hannah Kelly ’17\, theatre and Franki Graham ’13\, dance\, will tell us about the trajectories of their respective careers since graduating from UMBC. \nHannah Kelly will tell us about the path of her acting career after graduating from UMBC with a B.F.A. and creating a work/life balance: having a fulfilling acting career and starting a family\, spending time with loved ones\, and traveling. Finding the balance in life is something that is important to her\, especially in a career that is known to take a huge toll physically\, mentally\, and financially. Kelly’s philosophy: life enriches art\, life informs your art. Kelly had her first professional role in 2018 at Everyman Theatre and became a Resident Company Member at Everyman Theatre in 2019. Kelly has been in many professional productions in and around Baltimore throughout her career\, most recently: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?\, And Then There Were None\, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. You can see her perform next in The Mirror Crack’d at Everyman from November 29 to December 30. When not acting\, Kelly cares for her 5 month old daughter\, Eleanor\, owns a floral company\, Charmed Florals\, and works as an installation manager for a sign company. \nFranki Graham will explore how her roles as an artist\, educator\, administrator\, and arts leader have mutually reinforced each other and created unique career opportunities. Her connections within the dance community have opened unexpected doors\, and her curiosity and willingness to explore different avenues in the field continues to serve her. Grahams’s career has been non-linear\, each role giving a new opportunity to provide meaning and make an impact. Graham is a dance artist\, educator\, program administrator and director in Baltimore\, Maryland. Currently serving as the Dance Department Chair and Director for the Peabody Institute Preparatory Program since 2022\, Graham has spent her career using dance as the medium to transform lives and build community. After earning a B.A. in Dance as a Linehan Artist Scholar\, she earned an M.A. in Dance Performance at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London\, England as a Leverhulme Scholar\, which launched a professional performing career. Graham founded and directed a dance company with artist Jeanna Riscigno from 2017–20\, called LucidBeings Dance\, that performed across the DMV and was a catalyst for creative work. As an educator\, Graham has held roles in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools System\, within non-profit organizations\, as an adjunct professor at UMBC\, a master teacher and consultant for the Maryland Centers for Creative Classrooms program and served as a Board Member for the Maryland Dance Education Association. Graham is a certified Functional Awareness movement educator. \nThis event is presented by the Center for Innovation\, Research\, and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA). \n\nAdmission is free. \nThe event will begin at noon\, but registrants can arrive at 11:45 a.m. for a free lunch with dietary options. If you plan to arrive early for the lunch\, please r.s.v.p. by October 22. \n\nThis event is open for full participation by all individuals regardless of race\, color\, religion\, sex\, national origin\, or any other protected category under applicable federal law\, state law\, and the University’s nondiscrimination policy. \n

SUMMARY:Laughter in the Dark: The Consolation of Comedy
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Ethics and Values presents an Eminent Scholar Lecture with Kieran Setiya\, Peter de Florez Professor of Philosophy at MIT\, who will speak on Laughter in the Dark: The Consolation of Comedy. \nCan humour help us cope with hardship without distancing or denial? Does laughter at misfortune manifest what Bergson called “a momentary anesthesia of the heart”—or worse? This talk takes up a puzzle about confessional comedy: why isn’t it vicious to draw pleasure from another’s suffering\, as we do when comics joke about trauma? The answer turns on the fine structure of empathy; and the upshot is a theory of confessional stand-up as bespoke theodicy: a temporary\, interpersonal solution to the emotional problem of evil. This solution is one we can administer to ourselves\, using humor to confront adversity. Content note: violence and sexual assault. \nKieran Setiya is Peter de Florez Professor of Philosophy at MIT\, where he works on ethics and related questions about human agency and human knowledge. He is the author of Reasons without Rationalism\, Knowing Right From Wrong\, Midlife: A Philosophical Guide and Life Is Hard: How Philosophy Can Help Us Find Our Way\, which was selected as a Best Book of 2022 by The Economist and The New Yorker. His writing has appeared in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, the LA Review of Books\, the TLS\, the London Review of Books\, the Boston Review\, The Atlantic\, Aeon\, and The Yale Review\, as well as numerous academic journals. He is working on a book about laughter as a guide to life. \n\nAdmission is free. Preregistration is encouraged but not required. Please visit here to reserve a seat. \nThis event will be livestreamed on UMBCtube. \n\nThis event is open for full participation by all individuals regardless of race\, color\, religion\, sex\, national origin\, or any other protected category under applicable federal law\, state law\, and the University’s nondiscrimination policy. UMBC is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for all faculty\, staff\, students\, and visitors. To request accessibility accommodations\, please contact ethics@umbc.edu.

SUMMARY:Humanities Forum — Nishant Upadhyay: Indians on Indian Lands: Intersections of Race\, Caste\, and Indigeneity
DESCRIPTION:Humanities Forum Lecture with Nishant Upadhyay\nIndians on Indian Lands: Intersections of Race\, Caste\, and Indigeneity\nThis lecture is part of the Fall 2026 Humanities Forum \nIndians on Indian Lands unravels Indian diasporic complicity in its ongoing colonial relationship with Indigenous peoples\, lands\, and nations in Canada. Upadhyay examines the interwoven and simultaneous areas of dominant Indian caste complicity in processes of settler colonialism\, antiblackness\, capitalism\, brahminical supremacy\, Hindu nationalism\, and heteropatriarchy. Resource extraction in British Columbia in the 1970s through the 1990s and in present-day Alberta offers examples of spaces that illuminate the dispossession of Indigenous peoples and simultaneously reveals how race\, gender\, and caste affect labor formations. Upadhyay juxtaposes these extraction sites with examples of anticolonial activism and solidarities from Tkaronto (Toronto). Analyzing silence on settler colonialism and brahminical caste supremacy\, Upadhyay upends the idea of dominant caste Indian diasporas as racially victimized and shows that claiming victimhood denies a very real complicity in enforcing other power structures. Exploring stories of quotidian proximity and intimacy between Indigenous and South Asian communities\, Upadhyay offers meditations on anticolonial and anti-casteist ways of knowledge production\, ethical relationalities\, and solidarities. Groundbreaking and ambitious\, Indians on Indian Lands presents the case for holding Indian diasporas accountable for acts of violence within a colonial settler nation. \n\nNishant Upadhyay is an associate professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado\, Boulder. They hold a PhD in Social and Political Thought from the York University\, Toronto. Upadhyay is the author of Indians on Indian Lands: Intersections of Race\, Caste\, and Indigeneity (University of Illinois Press\, 2024). Their research and teaching focuses on settler colonialism and empire\, intersections of race\, caste\, and indigeneity\, queer and trans of color studies\, and South Asian diaspora. \n\nAdmission is free. \n\nThis lecture\, presented by the Dresher Center’s Humanities Forum\, is co-sponsored by the Asian Studies Program. \n\nUMBC is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for all faculty\, staff\, students\, and visitors. SUMMARY:Artist roundtable on experimental praxis
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Somewhere Over the Rainbow of Row Homes\, We Fly\, an intergenerational group exhibition organized by curator Angela N. Carroll\, the Center for Art\, Design\, and Visual Culture presents an artist roundtable on experimental praxis moderated by Karin Oen-Lee in conversation with Lehna Huie and Ada Pinkston. \n\nKarin Oen-Lee is an Assistant Professor of Art History and Museum Studies at UMBC as well as a curator and museum educator whose work focuses on transmediatic and transcultural art practices that defy easy categorization. Her current area of focus is a book project that investigates new media experimental artistic practices in early Reform Era China (1978–1989). Previously Director of the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore\, head of NTU’s art history department\, and a curator at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco\, Oen-Lee foregrounds supporting artists’ research practices\, transdisciplinary collaborations\, and the historiography of art and its institutions as modes of curation and knowledge production. \nLehna Huie is a multidisciplinary artist who draws inspiration from Caribbean oral histories and dream landscapes to create visual meditations on memory and lineage. Her practice combines diverse materials—such as paint\, textiles\, and found objects—to honor and personify the lands and waters of her roots. An M.F.A. graduate from MICA\, Huie has participated in numerous international exhibitions and prestigious residencies\, while also working as a Legacy Specialist preserving intergenerational artist archives. \nAda Pinkston is a Baltimore-based multimedia artist\, educator\, and cultural organizer whose work investigates the erasures and mythologies surrounding Black life\, memory\, and public space. Using performance\, digital media\, and sculpture\, she creates speculative monuments that challenge conventional collective memory and invite deeper inquiry into what is forgotten. Pinkston\, who holds an M.F.A. from MICA and is currently a lecturer at Towson University\, has exhibited internationally and serves on the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture. \n\nVisitor Information \nAdmission is free. \nThe CADVC is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 12 to 5 p.m.\, and Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nPlease visit here for directions and parking information. \nVisitors who need specific accommodations to attend the exhibition or events should contact the CADVC at cadvc@umbc.edu or 410-455-3188. \n\nAll events at CADVC are open for full participation by all individuals regardless of race\, color\, religion\, sex\, national origin\, or any other protected category under applicable federal law\, state law\, and the University’s nondiscrimination policy. \n

SUMMARY:Social Sciences Forum — 48th Annual W.E.B. DuBois Lecture — Takiyah Harper-Shipman: On Deviance and Defiance: Commandeering Futures Through Poor Black Women’s Social Reproduction
DESCRIPTION:Social Sciences Forum lecture with Takiyah Harper-Shipman\n48th Annual W.E.B. DuBois Lecture\nOn Deviance and Defiance: Commandeering Futures Through Poor Black Women’s Social Reproduction\nThis lecture is part of the Fall 2026 Social Sciences Forum \nAs poor Black women’s wage labor and fertility remained foundational sites of political and economic governance and surveillance\, women have devised resistance practices that we have come to understand as deviant and unhealthy. Harper-Shipman’s talk invites us to explore deviant and unhealthy practices of poor Black women within a liberatory framework for collective reproductive and material freedom for all people. It will examine how poor Black women in North Carolina and Senegal craft alternate routes and ends to reproductive freedom\, and how we can expand these practices as anti-capitalist and anti-fascist world-making efforts. \n\nT.D. Harper-Shipman is the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Chair of Africana Studies and Associate Professor of Philosophy\, Politics\, and Economics at Davidson College in North Carolina. She is a community organizer and activist whose activism spans social justice issues related to stopping the Charlotte’s Cop City and support for Palestine. Her scholarly work explores political economy at the intersections of race and gender. Dr. Harper-Shipman has authored two books: Unruly Fertility: Race\, Development\, and Decolonial Reproductive Politics (Stanford University Press\, July 2026) and Rethinking Ownership of Development in Africa (Routledge\, 2019); and published in leading scholarly journals\, including Third World Quarterly\, Journal of Asian and African Studies\, International Studies Review\, and Philosophy and Global Affairs. She has also contributed to public-facing intellectual forums such as Africa Is a Country\, The Global African Worker\, and Pambazuka. She serves on the editorial board of Third World Quarterly and is a former forum editor with the Miami Institute of Social Sciences. \n\nAdmission is free. \n\nOrganized by the Department of Africana Studies\, and is co-sponsored by the College of Arts\, Humanities\, and Social Sciences Dean’s Office; the Center for Social Science Scholarship; and the Shriver Center. \nCS3 sponsored events are open for full participation by all individuals regardless of race\, color\, religion\, sex\, national origin\, or any other protected category under applicable federal law\, state law\, and the University’s nondiscrimination policy. \n
