DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Retrievers Read 2026 presented by the UMBC Hilltop Society!  \nThis year\, we’re shaking things up with a Bingo Challenge and a mission to support the heart of our campus—the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery. \nRetrievers have always learned together. This summer we read together\, too. Whether you’re an alum\, student\, faculty\, parent\, or staff\, it’s time to hit the books! \nHow It Works \nStep 1: Sign up! \nAll UMBC community members are encouraged to participate! The first 250 alumni who sign up before May 18 will receive a physical “Retriever Reader” packet in the mail. Everyone else will receive a digital packet sent to the email they signed up with. \nAll participants will also receive a digital code for 20% off one item at the UMBC Bookstore. \n \nStep 2: Start reading!  \nAs you read\, keep track of your journey using your bingo sheet and reading log. For every book you finish\, mark off the corresponding category on your board. \n*Each book can only count toward a single category  \nStep 3: When you’re done\, click the button below and fill out the short form by August 31\, 2026 to let us know which books you read this summer. It’s that simple! \nFinal Submission Form \nStep 4: Win cool prizes!  \nWhen you submit your bingo card\, you will be entered into a drawing for awesome prize packs\, including gift cards to local and alumni-owned businesses. The more you read\, the more chances you have to win! \n\nBingo! SUMMARY:Lewis Hine in Maryland
DESCRIPTION:The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Lewis Hine in Maryland\, on display from August 24 through December 18. The exhibition will be accompanied by Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso. \nFrom 1908 to 1924\, documentary photographer Lewis Hine (American\, 1874–1940) traveled throughout the United States\, using his camera to document child labor on behalf of the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). He photographed children working in coal mines\, cotton mills\, farms\, tenements\, and city streets. The NCLC used Hine’s photographs and eyewitness reports to support its campaigns for labor regulation and reform. His images appeared in pamphlets\, posters\, traveling exhibitions\, and lantern-slide presentations across the country. Ultimately\, these searing photographs helped shape labor legislation in the United States and established a model for documentary photography. \nIn July 1909\, Hine visited Maryland\, photographing child workers at Bottomley berry farms in Anne Arundel County and at the J. S. Farrand Packing Company in Baltimore. Drawn from UMBC’s Photography Collections\, this exhibition explores the places and people behind these photographs. A selection of Hine’s most iconic and enduring images situates his Maryland work within the broader context of his documentary project. The exhibition also examines how Hine’s photographs functioned as tools of visual persuasion\, working in tandem with captions\, pamphlets\, slogans\, and posters to shape public opinion — and ultimately legislation — regarding the changing role of children in the workforce and in American society. \nThis exhibition commemorates MD250 and the U.S. Semiquincentennial\, exploring themes foundational to the nation’s history\, including immigration and migration\, the power of documentary photographs\, and social justice. \n\nPublic Programs \nCuratorial tour and opening reception\nThursday September 17\, 5 p.m. \nPanel Discussion: Food and Labor in Maryland\nThursday October 22\, 6 p.m.\, followed by a reception\nThis event is co-organized with Department of American Studies and the Orser Center for Public Humanities at UMBC. \nClosing reception\nThursday December 4\, 6 p.m. \nAll public program are free and open to the public. \n\nLisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso \nLewis Hine in Maryland is accompanied by an installation of two works from artist Lisa Oppenheim’s Spine series\, in which she appropriates images by Lewis Hine from the Library of Congress. Enlarged to life size\, the photographs depict the backs of adolescent textile workers whose bodies were curved and misshapen by their labor. Oppenheim has bifurcated each image along the vertical axis of the spine\, emphasizing the physical impact of repetitive work on the body. Lisa Oppenheim/Lewis Hine: Spine/Verso places Oppenheim’s works in dialogue with a selection of photographs from UMBC’s Lewis Hine Collection\, displayed with their versos — or backs — visible to viewers. \nIn 2023\, with support from a National Endowment for the Humanities Preservation Assistance Grant\, Special Collections staff undertook a major initiative to rehouse the Lewis Hine photographs and digitize their versos. The backs of the photographs bear captions\, annotations\, and inscriptions by Hine and others employed by the NCLC\, testifying to their use in the organization’s publications and promotional campaigns. Together\, these materials reveal the many forms of labor documented in Hine’s work and the ways that labor is imprinted upon — and remains legible within — the bodies of his subjects. \n \nLisa Oppenheim was born in 1975 in New York\, New York. She received a BA in art and semiotics from Brown University in 1998 and an MFA in film and video from Bard College in 2001. She attended the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program for studio art in 2003. Oppenheim’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at MUDAM\, The Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg (2025); Huis Marseille\, Amsterdam (2024)\, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2017)\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (2016). In 2014\, Oppenheim was the recipient of the AIMIA|AGO Photography Prize from the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Shpilman International Photography Prize from the Israel Museum. Her work is held in the permanent collections of The J. Paul Getty Museum\, Los Angeles\, Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, San Francisco\, Solomon R. By blending traditional craft with modern computational software and performance elements like choreographed dancers\, Echelman combines ancient craft with original computational design software to create artworks that have become focal points for urban life on five continents. \nOprah ranked Echelman’s work #1 on her List of 50 Things That Make You Say Wow!\, and received the Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award in Visual Arts in 2014\, honoring “the greatest innovators in America today.” Recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship\, Aspen Institute Henry Crown Fellowship\, Harvard Loeb Fellowship\, and Fulbright Lectureship\, Echelman was named an Architectural Digest Innovator for “changing the very essence of urban spaces.” Her TED talk Taking Imagination Seriously has been translated into 35 languages with more than two million views. \nThis event is presented by UMBC’s Center for Innovation\, Research\, and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA). \n\nJanet Echelman’s educational path has been nonlinear. After graduating from Harvard College\, she lived in a Balinese village for five years\, then completed separate graduate programs in painting and psychology. Tufts University recently awarded her an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts for her public artworks\, noting that she never formally studied sculpture or engineering. It was an unexpected loss of her painting materials while on a Fulbright that began her journey from collaborating with fishermen on a beach in India to crafting her monumental fluidly-moving aerial sculptures today\, in urban centers from London\, Madrid\, and Amsterdam\, to Shanghai\, Singapore\, Santiago\, and Sydney. \nEchelman’s permanent commissions have transformed urban environments worldwide\, and include Remembering the Future at the MIT Museum (2025)\, Butterfly Rest Stop in Frisco\, TX (2024)\, Current in Columbus\, OH (2023)\, Bending Arc at the St. Pete Pier in Florida (2020)\, Earthtime Korea in South Korea (2020)\, mist sculpture Pulse (2018) in front of Philadelphia City Hall\, Dream Catcher (2017) on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood\, CA\, Impatient Optimist (2015) at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle\, Every Beating Second (2011) at San Francisco International Airport\, Her Secret Is Patience (2009) in downtown Phoenix\, and She Changes (2005) in Porto\, Portugal. \nIn 2025\, Chronicle Books published Radical Softness: The Responsive Art of Janet Echelman\, a 288-page visual compendium of Echelman’s oeuvre which accompanies a traveling mid-career museum retrospective. \n\nAdmission is free. DESCRIPTION:Mary Celenza\, a showrunner\, director\, and writer with over 25 years of experience in television and audio production\, will discuss her extensive career. She is currently the Head of Current and Executive Producer at Treefort Media\, where she oversees series for Audible\, Wondery\, Netflix\, and Focus Features. \nThis event is presented by UMBC’s Center for Innovation\, Research\, and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA). \n\nOver the course of her career\, Mary Celenza has worked across a wide variety of formats including documentary\, talk\, news\, comedy\, competition and game shows. She began her career in news at Good Morning America in New York\, and later worked alongside legendary television host Barbara Walters for four years before relocating to Los Angeles. Ms. Celenza is an experienced multi-cam and single-cam director with credits spanning long and short form documentary pieces and comedic shorts. As a showrunner\, she has helmed unscripted series for Apple Music\, Disney+\, Syfy\, Discovery+\, Roku\, Prime and Pokémon. In the competition space\, she shepherded 13 seasons of the Critics’ Choice Award-winning special makeup effects series Face Off\, as well as the moving floor dance competition series Floored. In the documentary space\, she was one of the showrunners on the Disney+ series Pick of the Litter\, about Guide Dogs for the Blind\, and a documentary series for the game company Pokémon. In addition to production\, Ms. Celenza spent two years as a development executive for ABC Studios/Disney. She is a member of the Directors Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America\, and has served as a guest lecturer at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles. Ms. Celenza received a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University in 1995 with a concentration in Communications and Native American Studies. \n\nAdmission is free.
