UMBC Theatre presents Stories Told Small, directed by Colette Searls and Nate Sinnott and presented in the Black Box Theatre. Written and directed by UMBC theatre students, Stories Told Small packs big meaning into miniature dramas, using puppetry and all manner of tiny objects to spin novel tales. Stories spring from performers’ minds, presented in an original variety show!
The Maryland Arts Summit, hosted at UMBC, is a statewide conference presented by and for the Maryland arts sector, which includes, but is not limited to: arts advocates, arts educators and teaching artists, independent artists, arts organizations, youth, community stakeholders, arts and entertainment districts, county arts agencies of Maryland, public artists, boards of directors, and folklife artists.
UMBC Theatre presents Dracula: A Feminist Revenge Fantasy, Really by Kate Hamill, directed by Kathryn Chase Bryer. In this new adaptation of Dracula, the playwright-actor confronts the sexism in Bram Stoker’s original work, turning it into a feminist revenge fantasy.
UMBC Theatre presents shOUT: The Queer Theatre Project directed by Gerrad Alex Taylor, with musician direction by Andrew Hann. Facilitated by director Gerrad Alex Taylor, designer Eric Abele, and dramaturg Susan McCully, shOUT celebrates LGBTQIA+ playwrights, characters, and innovations. The performance includes scenes, songs, and monologues drawn from plays that show us that queer theatre history IS American theatre history. An exhibit of costume design and dramaturgy will accompany the performance.
UMBC Theatre presents Slime by Bryony Lavery, directed by Nigel Semaj. Welcome to the Third Annual Slime Crisis Conference! Seven grad students, all fluent in animal languages, linguistics, and culture, join delegates of almost every species to save life on earth from a toxic slime. As they debate and translate for dolphins, seabirds, and polar bears, they ask, “Who is coming to save us?” The answer might surprise you….
As part of the Spring 2024 Plays for Our Planet initiative, UMBC Theatre presents an Introduction to the Sustainable Production Toolkit with Lauren Gaston and Sandra Goldmark. Led by the authors of The Sustainable Production Toolkit, this talk and workshop introduces concrete tools and best practices for prioritizing the intertwined needs for greater environmental, social, and economic sustainability in the theatre industry.
As part of the Spring 2024 Plays for Our Planet initiative, UMBC Theatre presents a Student Design Workshop with Lauren Gaston and Sandra Goldmark. Led by the authors of the Sustainable Production Toolkit, this session will give students an opportunity to dig deeper into sustainable design and production practices and resources. Working as a team, students will develop concrete action items based on one or two goals generated in the afternoon session.
