SUMMARY:Lewis Hine in Maryland — Panel Discussion: Food and Labor in Maryland
DESCRIPTION:The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents a Panel Discussion on Food and Labor in Maryland in conjunction with the exhibition Lewis Hine in Maryland\, on display through December 18. \nFrom 1908 to 1924\, documentary photographer Lewis Hine (American\, 1874–1940) traveled throughout the United States\, using his camera to document child labor on behalf of the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). He photographed children working in coal mines\, cotton mills\, farms\, tenements\, and city streets. The NCLC used Hine’s photographs and eyewitness reports to support its campaigns for labor regulation and reform. His images appeared in pamphlets\, posters\, traveling exhibitions\, and lantern-slide presentations across the country. Ultimately\, these searing photographs helped shape labor legislation in the United States and established a model for documentary photography. \nThis event is co-organized with the Department of American Studies and the Orser Center for Public Humanities. \n\nVisitor Information \nAdmission to the panel discussion and to the exhibition is free. DESCRIPTION:The Baltimore Classical Guitar Society presents SoloDuo\, featuring classical guitarists Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli. \nSoloDuo has performed throughout Europe\, Asia\, the United States\, Canada and Latin America\, and have been acclaimed everywhere — from New York’s Carnegie Hall to Seoul’s Sejong Chamber Hall\, from Kiev’s Hall of Columns to Vienna’s Konzerthaus — as an extraordinary ensemble. About one of their performances\, The Washington Post wrote\, “the duo’s playing was nothing less than rapturous — profound and unforgettable musicianship of the highest order.” \nIn addition to classic\, romantic and modern repertoire\, Mela and Micheli — joined by lutenist Massimo Lonardi — have extensively explored Italian music from the 17th and 18th centuries for baroque guitar and theorbo. SUMMARY:Mary Celenza: Television and Podcast Producer
DESCRIPTION:Mary Celenza\, a showrunner\, director\, and writer with over 25 years of experience in television and audio production\, will discuss her extensive career. She is currently the Head of Current and Executive Producer at Treefort Media\, where she oversees series for Audible\, Wondery\, Netflix\, and Focus Features. \nThis event is presented by UMBC’s Center for Innovation\, Research\, and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA). \n\nOver the course of her career\, Mary Celenza has worked across a wide variety of formats including documentary\, talk\, news\, comedy\, competition and game shows. She began her career in news at Good Morning America in New York\, and later worked alongside legendary television host Barbara Walters for four years before relocating to Los Angeles. Ms. Celenza is an experienced multi-cam and single-cam director with credits spanning long and short form documentary pieces and comedic shorts. As a showrunner\, she has helmed unscripted series for Apple Music\, Disney+\, Syfy\, Discovery+\, Roku\, Prime and Pokémon. In the competition space\, she shepherded 13 seasons of the Critics’ Choice Award-winning special makeup effects series Face Off\, as well as the moving floor dance competition series Floored. In the documentary space\, she was one of the showrunners on the Disney+ series Pick of the Litter\, about Guide Dogs for the Blind\, and a documentary series for the game company Pokémon. In addition to production\, Ms. Celenza spent two years as a development executive for ABC Studios/Disney. She is a member of the Directors Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America\, and has served as a guest lecturer at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles. Ms. Celenza received a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University in 1995 with a concentration in Communications and Native American Studies. \n\nAdmission is free. SUMMARY:Humanities Forum — Nishant Upadhyay: Indians on Indian Lands: Intersections of Race\, Caste\, and Indigeneity
DESCRIPTION:Humanities Forum Lecture with Nishant Upadhyay\nIndians on Indian Lands: Intersections of Race\, Caste\, and Indigeneity\nThis lecture is part of the Fall 2026 Humanities Forum \nIndians on Indian Lands unravels Indian diasporic complicity in its ongoing colonial relationship with Indigenous peoples\, lands\, and nations in Canada. Upadhyay examines the interwoven and simultaneous areas of dominant Indian caste complicity in processes of settler colonialism\, antiblackness\, capitalism\, brahminical supremacy\, Hindu nationalism\, and heteropatriarchy. Resource extraction in British Columbia in the 1970s through the 1990s and in present-day Alberta offers examples of spaces that illuminate the dispossession of Indigenous peoples and simultaneously reveals how race\, gender\, and caste affect labor formations. Upadhyay juxtaposes these extraction sites with examples of anticolonial activism and solidarities from Tkaronto (Toronto). Analyzing silence on settler colonialism and brahminical caste supremacy\, Upadhyay upends the idea of dominant caste Indian diasporas as racially victimized and shows that claiming victimhood denies a very real complicity in enforcing other power structures. Exploring stories of quotidian proximity and intimacy between Indigenous and South Asian communities\, Upadhyay offers meditations on anticolonial and anti-casteist ways of knowledge production\, ethical relationalities\, and solidarities. Groundbreaking and ambitious\, Indians on Indian Lands presents the case for holding Indian diasporas accountable for acts of violence within a colonial settler nation. \n\nNishant Upadhyay is an associate professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado\, Boulder. They hold a PhD in Social and Political Thought from the York University\, Toronto. Upadhyay is the author of Indians on Indian Lands: Intersections of Race\, Caste\, and Indigeneity (University of Illinois Press\, 2024). DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Somewhere Over the Rainbow of Row Homes\, We Fly\, an intergenerational group exhibition organized by curator Angela N. Carroll\, the Center for Art\, Design\, and Visual Culture presents an artist roundtable on experimental praxis moderated by Ernest Shaw in conversation with Ada Pinkston and Lehna Huie. \n\nArtist Ernest Shaw\, Jr. is a Baltimore-based educator whose work explores the duality of the African American experience through sophisticated color and figurative art. His practice honors traditional African and African American figurative art\, often drawing on rhythmic influences from his West African drumming training. A product of the Baltimore City Public School system\, Shaw balances his artistic career with teaching in Baltimore City and as an adjunct professor at Coppin State University. \nAda Pinkston is a Baltimore-based multimedia artist\, educator\, and cultural organizer whose work investigates the erasures and mythologies surrounding Black life\, memory\, and public space. Using performance\, digital media\, and sculpture\, she creates speculative monuments that challenge conventional collective memory and invite deeper inquiry into what is forgotten. Pinkston\, who holds an M.F.A. from MICA and is currently a lecturer at Towson University\, has exhibited internationally and serves on the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture. \nLehna Huie is a multidisciplinary artist who draws inspiration from Caribbean oral histories and dream landscapes to create visual meditations on memory and lineage. Her practice combines diverse materials—such as paint\, textiles\, and found objects—to honor and personify the lands and waters of her roots. DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary visual artist Stephanie J. Williams will tell us about her artistic practice\, which bridges sculpture and animation. Her work navigates hierarchies of taste\, unpacking how “official” histories are constructed in order to understand contemporary social coding. \nThis event is presented by UMBC’s Center for Innovation\, Research\, and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA). \n\nStephanie J. Williams is an interdisciplinary visual artist whose work has been exhibited in Fictions\, part of the Studio Museum in Harlem’s F-show image of Stephanie J. Williamsexhibitions\, at the Walters Art Museum as a Sondheim Finalist\, as well as with Washington Project for the Arts\, Lawrence University\, and the Delaware Contemporary. She has been awarded residencies at Yaddo\, Sculpture Space\, Williams College\, the Nicholson Project\, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts\, and ACRE. Recent animated works have screened at Slamdance (2024)\, Ann Arbor Film Festival (2024)\, the New Orleans Film Festival (Best Animated Short\, 2022)\, Sweaty Eyeballs Animation Festival (2023\, Jury Citation – 2022)\, the Atlanta Film Festival (2023\, 2024) and Outfest LA LGBTQIA+ Film Festival (2023). She has received grants from the Saul Zaentz Innovation Fund at Johns Hopkins University and the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities. She received an MFA in sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design under a Presidential Scholarship and is currently full time faculty in Animation at Maryland Institute College of Art. \n\nAdmission is free. DESCRIPTION:Social Sciences Forum lecture with Natanya Duncan\nRedeemed: Women of the UNIA and Du Bois’ “Damnation of Women”\nThis 48th Annual W.E.B. Du Bois Lecture is part of the Fall 2026 Social Sciences Forum \nIn 1919\, New Jersey law student Hannah Nichols called the women of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) into action. She asked women to “present an efficient womanhood … undaunted by anyone’s objections …” in the pursuit of global Black autonomy. The phrase “efficient womanhood” would appear one year later in W.E.B. Du Bois’ 1920 essay “Damnation of Womanhood.” Du Bois declared the history of Black women as laced with “insult and degradation” that was “both fearful and glorious.” For Du Bois\, the contradictions and dilemmas Black women faced “birthed … an efficient womanhood.” The efficient womanhood activist strategy scripted and lived by UNIA women served to shape the Pan Africanism of the 20th Century. This talk will examine how the women of the UNIA set the stage for Du Bois’ expanded ideas on gender and nation building in the 20th Century. \n\nNatanya Duncan is the Director of Africana Studies and Research Institute at Queens College City University of New York and an Associate Professor of History. A historian of the African Diaspora\, her research and teaching focuses on global freedom movements of the 20th and 21st Century. Duncan’s research interest includes constructions of identity and nation building amongst women of color; migrations; color and class in Diasporic communities; and the engagements of intellectuals throughout the African Diaspora. She is the author of An Efficient Womanhood: Women and the Making of the Universal Negro Improvement Association\, (University of North Carolina Press\, 2025)\, which focuses on the distinct activist strategies in-acted by women in the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). \n\nAdmission is free. \n\nThis event is organized by the Department of Africana Studies and is co-sponsored by the Center for Social Science Scholarship\, the College of Arts\, Humanities\, and Social Sciences Dean’s Office\, and the Dresher Center for the Humanities. \n

DESCRIPTION:Humanities Forum Lecture with Jorell A. Meléndez-Badillo\nPuerto Rico\, Historical Thinking\, and the Politics of Forgetting in the Caribbean\nThis lecture is part of the Fall 2026 Humanities Forum \nPuerto Rican history has been a contested space ever since its early days. From Fray Íñigo Abad y la Sierra’s 1788 book to Paul G. Miller’s Historia de Puerto Rico in the early twentieth century\, the production of history has served different political purposes. This lecture will explore the ways that history teaching and writing gave way to racialized tropes of Puerto Rican docility and laziness. More recently\, however\, the state has moved to silence or erase the past through Puerto Rico’s “politics of forgetting.” The talk ends with the ways that these ideas are being challenged by artists and cultural producers. \n\nJorell Meléndez-Badillo’s works focuses on the global circulation of radical ideas from the standpoint of working-class intellectual communities in Puerto Rico\, the Caribbean\, and Latin America. His is the author of Puerto Rico: A National History (Princeton University Press\, 2024)\, The Lettered Barriada: Workers\, Archival Power\, and the Politics of Knowledge in Puerto Rico (Duke UP\, 2021) and Páginas libres: Breve antología del pensamiento anarquista en Puerto Rico (Editora Educación Emergente\, 2021). His work on the histories of anarchism\, labor\, and radical politics has also been published in book chapters\, as well as journal and newspaper articles in Puerto Rico and Latin America. His work has appeared in Caribbean Studies Journal\, Latin American Perspectives\, and Theory in Action\, among others. Meléndez-Badillo holds a Ph.D. in Latin American History from the University of Connecticut\, where he was a Ford Foundation Fellow and a Humanities Institute Fellow. Before the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, he was Assistant Professor and Andrew W. Mellon Faculty Fellow at Dartmouth College. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Somewhere Over the Rainbow of Row Homes\, We Fly\, an intergenerational group exhibition organized by curator Angela N. Carroll\, the Center for Art\, Design\, and Visual Culture presents an artist talk about memory\, communal and familial photographic archives\, and land sovereignty\, moderated by Jasmine Washington in conversation with Darrius Fox and Kelvin Bulluck. \n\nJasmine Gabrielle Washington is a multi-disciplinary artist\, researcher\, and archivist working between Baltimore\, New York\, and Virginia. Her practice utilizes photography\, film\, and archives to explore the circulation of care and how memory shapes human understanding. She is the founder of the philanthropic infrastructure Use Your Voice and currently serves as Guest Gallery Curator at Gormley Gallery. As an MFA candidate at the Maryland Institute College of Art\, she has received numerous honors including the Fred Lazarus Award for Social Change. \nDarrius Fox is a self-taught lens-based artist from Baltimore who transitioned from wedding photography to focus on the preservation of analog techniques. He personally handles every stage of his artistic process\, from shooting and developing to scanning and printing his images by hand. His body of work encompasses a diverse range of subjects\, including urban landscapes\, portraiture\, and candid street scenes. Through his dedicated practice\, Fox captures the nuances of everyday life while honoring the traditional craft of film photography. \nKelvin Bulluck is an award-winning photographer whose editorial and fashion imagery has been featured in prominent publications like British Vogue and Essence. His artistic exploration is centered on the concept of beauty\, using portraiture to investigate societal standards and personal perspectives. He prioritizes building deep connections with his subjects to pinpoint and highlight unique aspects of their character through his lens. DESCRIPTION:The Department of Music presents UMBC Wind Ensemble under the direction of Walter Harley\, with clarinet soloist Natalie Groom. The program features an eclectic mix of wind band classics and engaging new works\, including Nathan Daughtrey’s Twitch for clarinet and band. \n\nThe UMBC Wind Ensemble has celebrated performances with internationally recognized guest artists including Glee pianist and music director Brad Ellis\, Emmy-nominated composer and genre-bending violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain\, the American Brass Quintet\, singer-songwriter Diana Lawrence\, Canadian Brass veteran Joe Burgstaller\, international tuba artist Oystein Baadsvik\, Cleveland Orchestra trombonist Shachar Israel\, Marine Band co-principal oboe Trevor Mowry\, former Marine Band clarinetist Randall Riffle\, and UMBC professor of violin Airi Yoshioka. The ensemble seeks to regularly commission and perform music by living composers. Their premiere performance of Samuel Winnie’s Nightfall in Lothlorien was a finalist for the 2016 American Prize Ernst Bacon Memorial Award. Filtering\, the ensemble’s debut album released on the Albany label in April 2022\, has been hailed by American Record Guide as a “fine album” featuring “energetic and committed playing.” \n\nAdmission is free\, but tickets are required. A charming devil arrives in the quiet village of Edmonton to bargain for the souls of its residents in exchange for their darkest wishes. Elizabeth should be his easiest target\, having been labeled a “witch” and cast out by the town\, but her soul is not so readily bought. As the devil returns to convince her — and then returns again — unexpected passions flare\, alliances are formed\, and the village is forever changed. SUMMARY:UMBC Gamelan Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Music presents the UMBC Gamelan Ensemble under the direction of Michelle Purdy. \nThe ensemble performs on a central Javanese gamelan\, a gong-chime orchestra of Indonesia. Although most of the instruments of the gamelan are made of bronze\, the ensemble also includes drums\, xylophones\, bamboo flutes\, and plucked and bowed string instruments. \nThe ensemble also performs on a Balinese gamelan angklung\, one of many types of gong-chime orchestras from the island of Bali\, Indonesia. This small ensemble\, made up of gongs\, single-octave metallophones\, drums\, cymbals\, and flutes\, is tuned to a four-tone slendro scale. \n\nAdmission is free\, but tickets are required. DESCRIPTION:The Department of Music presents the UMBC Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Philip Mann with the combined choruses — UMBC Camerata\, Jubilee Singers\, and UMBC Gospel Choir — in a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. \nComposed between 1822 and 1824 when Beethoven was almost completely deaf\, the Ninth Symphony was premiered in 1824\, and is widely considered one of the masterpieces of Western classical music. The last movement features the famous “Ode to Joy\,” featuring chorus and vocal soloists. \n\nTwo performances:\nSaturday\, December 5\, 7:30 p.m.\nSunday\, December 6\, 3 p.m. \nTickets are free\, but reservations will be required. SUMMARY:UMBC Collegium Musicum: Big Feelings in Europe
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Music presents the UMBC Collegium Musicum under the direction of Lindsay Johnson\, joined by the Consorted Effort\, a faculty/staff recorder ensemble. In this concert of early music that draws on intense emotion and fantasy\, students will perform on replica Medieval\, Renaissance\, and Baroque instruments.  \nThe UMBC Collegium Musicum explores and performs vocal and instrumental music from Medieval\, Renaissance\, and Baroque periods\, sampling musical repertoires created between 800 and 1750. Under the direction of Lindsay Johnson\, the Collegium plays on historical instruments from the Department of Music’s collection — recorder\, crumhorn\, racket\, cornetto\, shawm\, harp\, guitar\, drum\, chamber organ\, harpsichord\, and Baroque violin\, viola\, cello\, and gambas on loan from the Viola da Gamba Society of America. \n\nAdmission is free\, and tickets are not required. \n\nLinehan Concert Hall is easy to visit\, with plenty of free parking.
