Longest tournament ever
May 15, 2003 - After almost two months, the badminton season finally wraps itself up. Thank you all for making this such a success year after year. Congratulations to everyone who has come in first or second in your respective brackets and I want to remind you to pick up your tee shirts or mugs and get your pictures taken in RAC 321 before the end of Monday, 5/19. This is also the last day to collect your forfeit deposit. As long as you didn't forfeit out of the tournament, you are eligible to collect your $5 forfeit deposit. Thanks again, and I look forward to getting some more pictures up here soon.

April 8, 2003 UPDATE!! - Womens Singles - There was a miscommunication and a game was played that did not need to be played. In the interest of moving the tournament along, I will count the game and I've rewritten the schedule a little bit to compensate for this. The change I've made added two games to the schedule and subtracted two games from the schedule. The way I set it up originally was that I had all seven women in the same pool and each participant played four other players in the bracket. This means that there are two players in the bracket whom you don't need to play. Please check the revised schedule and only report scores of games listed. If you want to make time to play some of the other players, I am not against practice. But as far as the tournament goes, please play at least all the games on the schedule. If I've confused you, please write me (Dustin) at recsports@umbc.edu or call me at 410-455-1540 and I'll try my best to explain it. Thanks and check out the new womens singles schedule. Good luck!

March 20, 2003 UPDATE!! - Mens Doubles Pool A - There was a minor misunderstanding and another team had to be added to the doubles pool. There were previously only 4 teams in the bracket, so instead of playing one team twice as originally scheduled, every team in the bracket will have to play every other team once.

March 19, 2003 UPDATE!! - Mens Singles Pool A - I made a small mistake and forgot to put one of the players into the mens singles bracket. He will be entered into pool A and the matches have been adjusted accordingly. Everyone is no longer playing everyone else in the bracket. You will play 4 of the 5 other players as scheduled. Sorry for the inconvenience.

March 18, 2003 - Badminton brackets are finally ready. Please read through all this information to get more familliar with the way this tournament will run. First of all, the mens singles, mens doubles, and coed doubles divisions have been split up into two brackets and the top two teams from each bracket will make it to the playoffs. The top four teams from womens singles will make the playoffs and the two womens doubles teams will just play a best-of-five matches against each other. IT WILL BE UP TO YOU TO SCHEDULE YOUR MATCHES. Please cc me on all e-mails so I will be able to make my decisions easier in the event of a forfeit. All e-mail addresses are supplied for you on the bracket schedule pages (check the links below). If you fail to schedule a match before the end date, I will keep your forfeit money. The last day for the regular season of this tournament will be Friday, April 18th. Playoffs will begin the following Monday, April 21st. I will be sending out deadline announcements, which if you do not meet, I will forfeit you out of the tournament. So please pay attention.

The first deadline will be Sunday, April 6th. Please have at least one match in each of the brackets you are playing in completed by then.

Times to play - The nets will be set up on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6-10pm. You are not confined to that time (or to UMBC if you know of another venue), but that time will be designated for badminton specifically so you do not have to fight the basketball players for space. If you want to try to set up the nets during other times and play a match then, you'll have to check with the daily court schedule. I'll tell you right now that Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-10pm are out completely. Weekends are still pretty decent times to play.

Net storage - Please make sure you store the nets away just as you found them or you will lose the priveledge of using them at all. They must be stored on the left side of the wall, not blocking the glass doors to outside - that is a fire hazard. The first time that happens, we may have to put the nets away again and only have them available on Mondays and Wednesdays. Just a warning I got from my boss that I need to pass on to you all. And there's nothing more aggravating at the end of a long day than closing the building and having to drag the nets back there by yourself. If you are the last people playing on a net, it will be your responsibility to put it away. If this priveledge is violated, we will have less nets available for use.

Scores - I would like the winner of every match to e-mail me the scores from the match. Something along the lines of:

Fisher over Rupert
15-12
9-15
15-7

If I don't get your e-mail, I will not know that you played the match.

A good idea - To get you started, I should have already e-mailed you all the e-mails of people in your group. What I would recommend is that you send out e-mails to the entire group telling them when you are free and what bracket you are in and see if anyone can show up at a certain time. For example, reply to the whole group of coed doubles:

Hi. This is Dustin Fisher from Coed Bracket B. My partner and I will be available from 6-8pm tomorrow. Can anyone from pool B make it tomorrow?

Eventually, you'll need to target certain teams, but this is a good way to get started instead of e-mailing everyone individually. It could also get you two matches in one night, which would be especially helpful for somebody playing in multiple brackets. And if 3 people answer, then you can play two matches at the same time. That would be awesome.

Courts - If you've been in the gym, you probably noticed that we taped a few more lines down on the badminton courts. Now, all four side courts are available to play doubles. We were having problems getting the bleachers in on the two ends of the gym, but I think we worked it out. Those courts are only going to be available for singles matches. If you are playing singles on a doubles court and there is a doubles team waiting to play a match without a place to go, please have the courtesy to take one of the courts on the end. Also, I will have the white inch-wide paper tape that currently lines the badminton courts available in the container with the rest of the equipment, in case you want to fix a line or two yourself during the night.

Equipment - The equipment will be set out before each session on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:00pm. I will order more shuttles, as I see we are running low and don't really have any of the good ones left. For now, please make sure you return all the shuttles to the container when you leave. We can't afford to lose anymore.

Money, etc. - There are still a few people to whom I have spoken, who have not yet paid. I need that money sometime tomorrow. You know who you are, and if you don't, your names are in red below. If you have any other questions, please write me at recsports@umbc.edu or call me at 410-455-1540. Thanks and I'll see you all soon.
