David J. Fink, Ph.D.

David's career in biotechnology and biomedical products developemnt spans over 30 years as a researcher, research manager, consultant, entrepreneur and officer of several start-up biotech companies. David was trained in chemical engineering at the Universities of Cincinnati and Michigan, and he was a post doctoral fellow in biochemistry at Purdue University. He then joined Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio, where he conducted and managed research over a 12-year period. In 1986 he founded his own biomedical consulting business Bio-Integration, Inc., then founded and served as President of CollaTek, Inc., to develop collagen-ased medical implants. He became the second employee of Osiris Therapeutics, a Maryland-based tissue regeneration company with a platform technology based on adult stem cells. He joined Chondros, Inc., a cell-based cartilage repair company and served as its President and COO until November 2003. From 2005-2008, David served as Vice President for R&D of Cell Targeting, Inc., a cell therapy start-up in Cleveland, Ohio. He has authored 40 scientific papers and book chapters, and he has been awarded 22 US patents.


As Director of Entrepreneurial Services for bwtech@UMBC's Research and Technology Park, David advises approximately 25 early-stage incubator companies. He is also the Program Manager for bwtech's Clean Energy Technology Incubator.


Lisa Beth Ferstenberg, MD

Lead Instructor


Lisa Beth is a physician and a serial entrepreneur with more than 30 years of experience in pharmaceutical development and clinical trials. She has served as a founding senior executive for several biopharmaceutical companies. Her experience ranges from medical devices, conventional drugs, biotech products and regenerative medicine.


As an educator, Lisa Beth takes a personal approach to mentoring students so that they can not only learn the discipline of entrepreneurship, but so they can identify their goals, aspirations and skill sets, set a direction, and achieve their goals.


Lisa Beth has been involved with the INNoVATE Program since its inception and continues to serve as mentor for a number of past graduates.


Nidhi Rumpal, Ph.D.

Program Coordinator


Nidhi is a graduate of the INNoVATE Program, Class of 2010. Prior to joining INNoVATE, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University. Nidhi holds a Ph.D. degree from University at Albany, NY. She has a strong technical background in neuroscience and stem cells. She is interested in biomedical technology commercialization.


Nidhi manages operational tasks necessary to coordinate program activities for smooth operations. She is responsible for event management, liaison team activities and ensure adherence to program guidelines.
