The Department of Human Resources would like to congratulate Greta Young and Barry Riley on receiving this honor.

Greta Young, Human Resources Associate, has been named UMBC’s Non-Exempt Employee of the Quarter effective July 1 through September 30, 2008. Greta began her career at UMBC in 1999, working in the Department of Human Resources as an Office Clerk providing customer service at the front reception desk. Over the past nine years, she has advanced in her career and works as a Human Resources Associate in the payroll unit of the department.  Greta has always sought out new duties and is eager to continue her professional development by learning new skills.

Greta was nominated by Paula Todd Sutherland, Administrative Assistant in the Department of Political Science. “Greta is very knowledgeable regarding her job and is always helpful, “says Sutherland. “Greta is an outstanding employee.  She is always so patient, positive and supportive. It is always a pleasure to work with Greta because she really knows her job and is always helpful and responsive. I have interacted with Greta many times over the years and each time was a pleasure. I believe that Ms. Young is an asset to HR and the UMBC community. She is most deserving of the Employee of the Quarter Award.”

Emma Sellers, Program Management Specialist for the Political Science Department, strongly supports the nomination for Greta.  Sellers says, “Greta has fantastic customer service skills.  She has a genuine personality and desires to help people. No question is ever too insignificant as far as Greta is concerned.”

Lisa Drouillard, Director of Payroll for the Department of Human Resources, says “Greta Young is an invaluable member of the HR-Payroll team.  She is known to always have a smile on her face and to bring happiness to everyone around her.  Greta received recognition at the Administration and Finance picnic for her wonderful customer service skills.  Greta interfaces with many employees every day and consistently and effortlessly provides a positive experience.  I frequently receive feedback that she is a pleasure to work with and that she is always extremely helpful.”

“No matter how high her work volume is or how many times she is interrupted to provide customer service Greta always maintains the same positive attitude,” says Darlene Davis, Payroll Manager for the Department of Human Resources.  “She does an excellent job working with our international students and employees.  Greta always displays a great deal of patience despite any language barriers that may exist.  She takes as much time as needed and does what ever she can to assure that the paperwork is complete and the individual understands the content.”

“Greta is an active member of her church and teaches Sunday school,” says Davis.  “In her free time she loves to travel and participate in social activities.  It seems that Greta always has a full social calendar.  She is an avid line dancer and recently returned from a cruise.”

Greta received her award on July 11, 2008 at a surprise celebration.  The celebration was attended by Human Resources staff and several members of the UMBC community.

Barry Riley, Manager of Contractual Services for Facilities Management, has been named UMBC’s Exempt Employee of the Quarter effective July 1 to September 30, 2008. Barry began his career at UMBC in 1981 working as a student employee in the Physical Education Department. In 1983, Barry became an Athletic Equipment Specialist and was promoted to Assistant Director of Athletic Operations in 1996. He transferred to Facilities Management in 1998 working at his current position, Manager of Contractual Services.

Barry was nominated for the Employee of the Quarter award by three Athletic Department staff members, Michael D’Archangelo, Chad Cradock and Sam Williams.

Michael D’Archangelo, Assistant Athletic Director for Physical Education and Recreational Programs, says, “Barry’s leadership within the Facilities Management department has transcended into a solid resource for our athletic department. As a point person, Barry has established field, maintenance, and housekeeping standards of an all time high. Multiple compliments on facility upgrades are attributed to his hard work and perseverance. He has been able to assist with our new ‘Rec House’ and field as well when needed.”

This past winter, Barry coordinated the renovations of the Recreational Activities Center’s women’s pool locker room. The Athletics Department received numerous complaints about the floor, lockers and general condition of the locker room. Barry was able to create a new area with a limited budget by making the most of his existing resources. D’Archangelo says, “Barry has secured our women’s pool locker room area into a first class area from a deteriorated area.”

Chad Cradock, Head Swimming Coach and Aquatics Director, says, “Barry spent extra time over the weekends in our women’s locker room. I thank Barry for everything. He goes above and beyond the call of duty to get the job done. Barry is always there when you need him.” Sam Williams, Assistant Athletic Director for Operations added, “Barry has been nothing but great to us.”

“Throughout Catonsville, Barry has been the leader in youth sports and his positive influences have brought UMBC benefits in turn” says D’Archangelo. “Barry has been always a large part of getting our area youth to athletic events, camps and volunteer project assistance.”

Barry received his award on July 8, 2008 at a surprised celebration. Barry was surprised to learn the meeting he was to attend was actually a party in honor of him.  Jim Donlan, Director, presented the award.  Lynne Schaeffer, Vice President for Administration and Finance, and many colleagues from Facilities Management attended and offered their congratulations  to Barry.
