Verification of Selective Service System Status

Federal law requires that all male U.S. citizens (regardless of where they live) and male immigrants residing in the United States (permanent resident aliens) register with the Selective Service System (SSS) within 30 days of their 18th birthday.

Men born after December 31, 1960, who are not registered with SSS are not eligible for federal aid (this includes grants and student loans), state scholarships, or institutional grants and scholarships. If the SSS cannot confirm your registration when your FAFSA is processed, our office must request documentation that shows that you have registered.

Submit Proof of Registration by Providing:
  • A copy of your Selective Service System Registration Card OR
  • A copy of your Selective Service System Registration Acknowledgment OR
  • Selective Service System's webpage confirmation of Registration (www.sss.gov)
Student must:
  • Submit an online correction to Question #22 on the FAFSA (www.fafsa.gov) OR
  • Register online at (www.sss.gov) AND submit Proof of Registration

  • Submit a Status Information Letter from Selective Service System AND
  • Submit a signed and dated detailed letter that explains whether you knowingly and willfully failed to register. The letter MUST include the following information:
    • Did you know you were supposed to register between ages 18-25?
    • Why didn't you register?
    • What living arrangements and/or personal circumstances prevented you from registering?
Student must submit an online correction to Question #21 on the FAFSA (www.fafsa.gov)

Submit Proof of Lawful Nonimmigrant on a Valid Visa Status:
  • For those in the U.S. on a valid visa who are between the ages of 18-25, student visa form (I-20) or other valid U.S. passport visa stamp with expiration date (dates MUST be from entry to the U.S. until AFTER the man turned 26)
