Ethnomusicologist Karl Signell has performed and presented Southeast Asian music for most of his career. He first played court gamelan music in Java in 1954, later for 18 years at the Embassy of Indonesia in Washington DC, and has produced audio documentaries on Cambodian, Hmong, and Tai Dam music for National Public Radio.

From 1994 to 2005, he edited Ethnomusicology Online, a peer-reviewed multimedia Web journal. His Web development company, Garuda Productions, has designed Web sites for the Smithsonian Institution, among other clients.
