Students pursuing advanced studies in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at UMBC explore fundamental concepts of biological and biochemical phenomena with faculty at the leading-edge of engineering research.
The primary emphasis of the program’s research activities is on biotechnology and biomedical engineering. Cross-disciplinary thesis research projects in this area are encouraged.
The department takes full advantage of its strategic location in the Baltimore-Washington corridor and its proximity to many of the nation’s top biochemical companies, including Baxter, MedImmune, Life Technologies, Martek and Human Genome Sciences.
The program’s research facilities include state-of-the-art laboratories in the Engineering Building and at the Technology Research Center. These facilities are extensively equipped with modern fermentation, cell culture, separations, protein structure and materials characterization, biomaterials synthesis and other analytical equipment. UMBC’s Office of Information Technology also provides excellent open computer facilities as well as classroom computer facilities which include state-of-the-art personal computers. Software maintained on these personal computer facilities includes MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Maple, Matlab, Mathematica, Minitab and Polymath. SuperPro process design and simulation software is also available. For Unix-based computing, the College of Engineering has a computer laboratory containing several workstations located in the Technology Research Center. Additionally, University Computing Services maintains a large number of Unix-based workstations available for student use. Unix-based facilities for larger scale computing are also operated by University Computing Services.
