WHAT | UMBC Community Celebrates Chess Team's National Championship | WHEN | Friday, February 5, 1999 4 to 6 p.m. | WHERE | Atrium Engineering Computer Science (ECS) Building Directions and campus map available here. | DETAILS | As the new semester gets underway, the UMBC community will celebrate the chess team's recent victory at the 1998 Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship in Dallas, Texas. Victory Celebration Activities: Open "blitz" tournament (game in five minutes) for anyone who wants to play a member of the chess team. Prizes for top finishers including a chocolate chess set and team polo shirt. Appearances by the UMBC Retriever mascot. For event information, call 410.455.2902. Upcoming UMBC chess events: February 20--International Grandmaster Alexander Shabalov (highest rated player in USA) will simultaneously play all challengers. April 17--Free chess instruction to students ages 9-12 at "MindFest," UMBC's annual brain fair. June/July--Summer Chess Camps at UMBC (Camp I: grades 1-5; Camp II: grades 6-12).
