We study fundamental questions in the relationship between the production and perception of communication signals. We are principally concerned with how auditory perception and the acoustic channel shape the structure of vocal signals.  A variety of model systems in both lab and field let us explore these questions from an interdisciplinary perspective that spans the range from sensory physiology to behavioral ecology.
