MATH 100 Introduction to Contemporary Mathematics 3 credits
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD
GEP/GFR:Meets M. Prerequisite: A suitable
score on the LRC Algebra placement exam.
[4377] 0101 MWF.......10:00am-10:50am (MP 103) SEIDMAN, T

MATH 106 Algebra and Elementary Functions 3 credits
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Prerequisite:
Qualifying score on LRC Algebra Placement
Exam. Not open to students who have
passed MATH 150. Sections 101, 201, 501,
and 801 are traditionally delivered
face-to-face courses. The instructor
meets students in a classroom setting for
either three 50-minute sessions or two
75-minute sessions, each week. The
instructor will hold two 50-minute office
hour sessions each week that are open to
all sections. Sections 1501, 1601, 1701,
1801 and 1901 are Hybrid courses,
consisting of both online instruction
materials and in class discussions. The
instructor meets students for a 50-minute
session each week in a computer lab. Also,
the instructor will hold two 50-minute
office hour sessions each week in a
computer lab with access to ALEKS (algebra
refresher software) for all sections
taught by the instructor. The course grade
is based on three 50-minute in class
examinations and a final examination. The
Hybrid sections are recommended for
students who need to review portions of
Algebra II and are comfortable using
computer technology.

Systems and Differential Equations
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course will
focus on the qualitative aspects of
dynamical systems modeled by systems of
ordinary differential equations. Most
differential equations arising in
applications cannot be solved in closed
form. However fundamental questions such
as existence and uniqueness of solutions,
continuous dependence of solutions on
initial conditions as well as notions of
local and global stability can be
investigated for a large class of
dynamical systems. This course aims to
develop an understanding of the theory
behind the rich qualitative behavior of
dynamical systems. Topics covered include
existence and uniqueness, linear systems,
characterization of behavior near
equilibria, forms of local and global
stability, Lyapunov functions,
Poincare-Bendixson theorem, bifurcations
and chaos. Prerequisites: MATH 221, MATH
225, MATH 301.

MATH 617 Introduction to Industrial Mathematics 3 credits
Grade Method: REG The variety of
mathematical methods used in industry
covers the whole spectrum of mathematics,
so this course, of necessity, will focus
on problems leading to ordinary and
partial differential equation models. The
course will take a case-based approach in
discussing key ideas and problem solving
methodologies. Dimensional analysis and
scaling, conservation principles,
constitutive relations, and modeling
philosophies will be discussed. Course
grade will mainly be derived from a number
of short reports submitted from assigned
projects. Application topics to be
discussed remain open, but typical
examples include electrochemical painting,
air quality modeling, lubrication theory,
fiber spinning, photocopy dynamics, etc.
The course is part of a departmental track
in industrial mathematics, but is open to
other students. Prerequisites: Math 225,
404, some familiarity with a high-level
programming language, or permission of
instructor.

Efficient Algorithms for Large Scale
Optimization Problems
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Many
optimization problems arising from
practical applications are large scale, in
the sense that they involve a large number
of variables and/or constraints. This
course will survey some recent numerical
algorithms that can efficiently solve such
problems. While the course will present
the theoretical foundations needed in the
convergence analysis of those algorithms,
the emphasis will be on practical
applications. Prerequisites: MATH 630,
MATH 650, MATH 651, or the consent of the
instructor.

Iterative Methods
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD The numerical
solution of partial differential equations
often requires solving linear equations of
sizes prohibiting the use of exact
solvers. Such problems are typically
solved via iterative methods augmented by
various (generic or specific)
preconditioning techniques. This course
aims to present iterative methods beyond
the algorithms discussed in MATH 630. The
first part of the course will cover Krylov
space methods (CG, BICG, MINRES, GMRES),
while the second part will be devoted to
preconditioning, the objective being to
introduce students to two important areas
of research: domain decomposition and
multigrid. Emphasis will be placed both on
mathematical aspects and numerical
experimentation. Prerequisites: Required:
MATH 620, MATH 630, or instructor's
approval. Recommended: MATH 621, MATH 635.
