370. This course will explore the
economic, social, cultural, religious, and
political trends that have shaped American
Jewish life from the seventeenth century
to today. It will proceed chronologically
through the major eras that demarcate the
American Jewish experience: 1) the
colonial and early national period of
sparse Jewish settlement; 2) the
nineteenth century rise of an American
Jewish population of Central European
origin; 3) the late-19th to mid-20th
century era of mass migration and
adjustment of Jews from Eastern Europe;
and 4) the second half of the twentieth
century to the present, a time
characterized by the development of a
specifically American Jewish community (or
communities) amidst smaller waves of
Jewish migration from Europe and the
Middle East, as well as the rise of
American Jewry to a position of leadership
among world Jewry.
