Students enrolled in this course will gain
experience in field sampling, laboratory
procedures and data analysis. Exercises
will involve field and laboratory work
with some combination of water, soils,
vegetation, landforms, and atmospheric
phenomena. Students will work in teams
and each will develop a final research
project for presentation at the end of the
semester. This is a required course for
students majoring in Environmental Science
or Environmental Studies. Prerequisites:
GEOG 120; co or pre-req of either BIOL 100
or CHEM 101.

Aided Negotiation of Water Resources
Disputes
(PermReq) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Enrollment is by
permission and limited to 15; interested
students should email Dr. Andrew Miller
(miller@umbc.edu) for more information.
Honors College students may count this
course toward their Honors requirements
but the course is open to other UMBC
students. Disputes over water are often
bitterly fought. The gun-slingers of the
old west have been replaced with armies of
high-priced lawyers and well-funded
lobbyists, but it is a take-no-prisoners
struggle nonetheless. Students in this
course will tackle a real-world,
interdisciplinary water-resources problem
using Computer Aided Negotiation (CAN), a
process for guiding stakeholders to create
a mutually beneficial solution to natural
resource disputes. Each group will have
the opportunity to consult with
professional experts, including lawyers,
biologists, geologists, engineers, and
economists. Groups of students playing the
stakeholders will identify what they want,
need, and can have from the water supply
based on relevant science and law, and
then use a water supply operations
computer model in planning sessions with
the other stakeholder groups to agree upon
the operating rules for the system. This
course does not require specific prior
technical expertise but is designed for a
diverse group of students with senior
standing, strong academic records, and a
range of disciplinary backgrounds. The
course is being piloted at UMBC in Fall
2008 under a grant from the National
Science Foundation with the goal of
developing a model that can be used at
other universities.
