MLL 190 The World of Language I (AH or C) 3 credits
| Language is a distinctive characteristic of the human species. This course examines the structure of both written and spoken forms of language across cultures, comparing them with animal communication and human gestural systems. We explore language's neurological basis, theories of origin, and first- and second- language learning. Note: MLL 190 is required for the MLL major. Also listed as ENGL 190, HUM 190 and LING 190. MLL 225 Iranian Cultures (C) 3 credits
| This course takes an intercultural approach to the examination of the historical, social, political, intellectual, artistic, spiritual, and literary experiences of Iranians. Students read from many sources, listen to Persian music, view movies about Iran and by Iranians, interpret poetry, learn conversational Persian (Farsi) language, and taste Persian cuisine. Some major topics include Iran through the times, Zoroastrianism and Islam, the Persian etiquettes, the poetry of Khayyam, Rumi and Forough, and ceremonies. This course is delivered as a mix of online and face-to- face formats, requiring students to participate in weekly discussions, submit their reports and homework and receive feedback online.
